At Christmas time in Lithuania it is very cold, normally with snow and ice on the ground.
Kūčiukai are bite-sized biscuits served with freshly made poppy milk that are only eaten during the Christmas season. You would never ever see Lithuanians having this dish any other time. So, if you want to try it, better make your way to Lithuania before Santa Claus.
(Kūčios) is a more important day than Christmas Day. Kūčios is also the name of the big Christmas Eve meal which families have together during the evening of Christmas Eve.
Almost every house in Lithuania has a Christmas tree decorated with garlands and lights. Actually decorating the Christmas tree is an important family tradition in and of itself.
Užgavėnės is a Lithuanian festival that takes place during the seventh week before Easter. Its name in English means "the time before Lent".
Užgavėnės begins on the night before Ash Wednesday, when an effigy of winter (usually named Morė) is burnt.
Devils, witches, goats, the grim reaper, gypsies, and other joyful and frightening characters appear in costumes during the celebrations.
On the Holy Saturday, people prepare for the Easter Sunday celebration. Exactly on this day the famous “Margučiai”, painted eggs, are made. Margučiai are decorated in a variety of the ways. The simplest method is to stain eggs with the natural dyes, which are near at hand like flower petals, hay, beets, onion skins, other different fruits and vegetables.

Holy Saturday is dedicated to painting Easter Eggs and preparing the Easter Sunday feast. Traditional Lithuanian Easter eggs are stained with natural dyes extracted from bark, leaves, fruit, and vegetables.
The Easter Granny delivers Easter eggs and treats to children. Children often prepare for the Easter Granny by leaving empty homemade egg nests outside their homes in gardens and shrubs. On Easter morning, they wake to search for their hidden margučiai treasures.
Stained margučiai appear in solid colors or patterns created when leaves or other materials are pressed onto the eggs during the staining process.
Vėlinės is a Lithuanian festival and the Day of the Dead is a day of prayer and remembrance for the souls of those who have died,on November 2.
Joninės is a midsummer folk festival celebrated on June 24 all around Lithuania. While midsummer day is celebrated throughout Europe, many Lithuanians have a particularly lively agenda on this day.
The traditions for Joninės include bonfire burning, wreath making and a searching for mythological blooming fern in a forest.
On the day of the crowning (July 6) of the only King of Lithuania, Mindaugas, you can witness a modern Lithuanian tradition.
In all the towns and cities of the country, and in other countries, Lithuanians sing the national anthem at a certain agreed time. Not even a decade-old tradition, yet it is one of the most successful and beloved in the country.
