Superheroes will save the world from pandemic

Pandemic has changed our life and we won’t be the same after this period.  Lots of people died and the world economy has been affected by a  difficult crisis.

But who will save us and our world from pandemic ? 

This is a collaborative work made by the students involved in the eTwinning project Fun English with Web 2.0 Tools, who talk about their amusing ideas to solve the problem.

The Main Characters

Anna is a very intelligent girl from Rome. She enjoys travelling very much and she has already visited many countries. During her travels she has met her friends Cristiano, Alejandra, Burak and Harry. Apart from being a born leader, Anna has a super power. She is a clairvoyant. Although her friends don’t know she can see beyond them, the first time she met them she could immediately see that they also have a super power.

Cristiano is a friendly and humble boy from Chelas, a suburban neighbourhood around Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Anna was walking the narrow and picturesque streets of Chelas when she saw a very short boy. Anna could immediately perceive that he is an Ant Man. She needed to get in touch with him, so she pretended she wasn’t seeing him and bumped into him. She apologized and then they started talking.

As for Alejandra, on one of her trips to Spain, Anna was admiring the beautiful medieval architecture of Granada when she sensed a strange feeling. She looked at a girl who was passing by and felt her power of Elasticity at once. Anna pretended she stumbled and fell down. As Alejandra is a very confident and sociable girl she ran to help Anna. That’s how the two girls became friends.

One day, Anna went on an expedition to Turkey to visit the Mosques. Burak was working at the Blue Mosque, in Istanbul, as a Tourist Guide. Burak is a quite impulsive boy. Although apparently a rebel, he is a very good person inside. Anna, interested in the Mosque, and in Burak, invited him for a tea to talk more about the Mosque. She could clearly see his Super Strength. They talked and both ended up as good friends. 

As for Harry, Anna met him just the month before, on the first day she arrived in London. She was really excited to ride on the London Eye. What amazing view from up there! She looked at the crowd and something called her attention. There was someone who made her goose bumps. He was there… but she couldn’t see him. It was Harry and his super power of Invisibility. As soon as the ride stopped she rushed out of the capsule and looked for the invisible boy to ask him, imagine… what time it was. This is how Anna found out that Harry was on holiday and that he is a very cautious and polite boy from Manchester.

After talking for hours, Harry invited Anna to visit him in Manchester the week after. She was really excited about it and convinced him to throw a party and invite a selected amount of people she knew. Harry thought it was strange, but he agreed.  

At the party, after speaking for a while, Anna decided to question everyone about the super powers they would like to have.  They all got confused because they had never thought about it, but after thinking for a while Alejandra said: “I would like to have power of Elasticity”.

I would prefer something like clairvoyance!

Everyone went silent for a second. They were confused. Then Anna admitted: “I have the power of Clairvoyance and I found all of you knowing that you, Alejandra, have the power of Elasticity, you, Cristiano, have the power of the Ant Man, you, Burak, have Super Strength and you, Harry, have the power of Invisibility!” While Anna spoke with a strong voice she pointed at each of her friends.

Alejandra, Cristiano, Burak and Harry were really anxious and scared and didn’t know what to say.

The reason why I found you is because we have a very important mission. A terrible pandemic is approaching and will change our lives and we won’t be the same after this period. Lots of people will die and the world economy will go through a difficult crisis. Unless we can prevent it, because.

WE WERE CHOSEN!

Chapter 2

When it all began

Anna said: "First we need to inform people to be careful about  their hygiene and things that surround us. You Alejandra! With your flexibility,  you will deliver quickly  gel and masks that Burak will provide you in large quantities. Thanks  to his super strength, he will move heavy contents from one country to another, to allow you to give them as quickly as you can to all the people.  Anna continued:"You Harry! Thanks to your invisibility you can keep people away from everything that is dirty and full of virus".

Harry said: "But I can't duplicate myself and be everywhere!". So Alejandra gave her opinion: “I think that all of them can’t do this, because it is impossible. Harry can’t be everywhere, I can’t deliver gel and masks to everyone because we haven’t got infinite stocks, also if Burak does his best. How will we do?”  Anna said:" it is only the beginning. We don't just need to make sure we reduce the spread, but we should also wipe out the virus". Anna continued:" This is your job, Cristiano! You must enter in the virus and kill it. But this is not a permanent solution, because the virus continues to reproduce”.

Time passes quickly and unfortunately  the situation was getting worse in the world . Our 5 chosen superheroes  begin phase one of their plan: delivering disinfectants and masks, thanks to Alejandra ‘s elasticity, in the poorest countries where the virus is making more victims. Their quick intervention saves the lives of many people, but the virus is unstoppable and has spread throughout North America.

Anna had foreseen everything and immediately sends Burak to distribute masks across the country.

The most infected countries were USA, Brazil, France, UK, China and South Africa. The plan gave a deep breath to some countries but in the others the situation was getting worse. The Team had to make the virus helpless

Cristiano wanted to fight the virus with his own power but it was too risky for him because of a previous illness that would have made him more vulnerable.

 Anna couldn't sleep well that night and, to make matters worse, the Team's mood was getting lower. She thought she had to create a new plan for motivating the team, but she knew she needed a help to create it. So she went back to Florence where his friend Dante Lamber, who was the CEO of the Huntik foundation (an association that studied "zoonoses"), lived.

The modern technologies of her association and its laboartories, helped Anna to understand the nature of the virus, all the people that were most exposed to contracting it and how. Anna asked: "but will this virus be eliminated? Or… if it cannot be eliminated, is there a way to be immune to the virus? Dante replied:" for now you can do nothing but pay attention to your hygiene to reduce the number of infections. We all have to wait for the only thing that can save us: the vaccine "

After receiving the good news, Anna immediately alerted the team members, telling them the news.

This raised the spirits of the team.

Chapter -3

Good News - Bad News

(ECA Elginkan High School)

After receiving the good news, Anna immediately went to their place and found other superheroes. All the superheroes were there. All of them welcomed her, and they were also curious because it was really easy to understand that Anna was really happy. She excitedly told others to sit down. They were like “Ok” but still didn’t have any idea what was going on.

   Anna started :

“I got news for you. The research for vaccine, it’s almost done.” Everyone was really happy, they were cheering. Anna looked at them and said “Let me finish.”

“It’s not done yet. OK, research continues but this doesn’t mean this virus thing is over. So, we are still going to keep social distance and wear masks.” Alejandra spoke up :

“This is still good news.” Everyone shook their heads positively. Burak was looking to social media on his mobile phone and said loudly: “Turn on the TV, now!” He continued : “Important news on Channel 23, we need to see it. Don’t forget, every second is important.” Harry found the remote control, turned the TV on and opened Channel 23.” They all looked the TV and started listening to the announcer.

“Greetings from Channel 23 News, we got really important information. The research for virus is almost done. The scientists are expecting the researches to end in one or two weeks. After the end of researches, the vaccination is going to start for volunteers. If everything goes as planned, it’s going to be in an order : Doctors, people over age of 65, people like teachers and others. Thanks for listening to Channel 23 News, stay safe!”

Superheroes were really happy. Harry said : “It seems like a celebration is in order. C’mon, let’s head to seaside.” Everyone agreed with Harry. But this time, Cristiano spoke up : “Hey! Don’t forget that virus thing is not done yet. Outside is still dangerous. If a celebration is in order, it’s going to be here. Not outside.” This time, everyone agreed with Cristiano, including Harry.

Suddenly, Anna’s phone rang. She answered the call, it was Dante Lamber, the CEO of Huntik Foundation. He said something that made Anna really sad, even made her cry. Then, he hang up the phone. Everyone was looking to Anna, why she was crying?

Anna looked to the other superheroes and sadly said : “Does anyone want to hear the bad news?”

Chapter 4 - 

Mutation

Gülşen Batar Anatolian High School

Everyone gave attention to Anna and she said:

The virus started to getting mutation

Everybody got sad and don't know what to do.

Alejandra:

Come on guys don't lost your motivation

And Burak:

Yeah,if we keep protect and warn people mutation is nothing.

And first boys started their jobs then girls.

Anna said:

 Yes guys said you are all right, but she was still crying.

Alejandra  went to Anna and hugged her. They had to do research on this again. They immediately got to work. Anna immediately called Donte Lamber and got information about the mutation of the virus. The virus was spreading faster but the killing rate was the same and the vaccine was  It had positive results on this virus as well.

 Anna immediately told the children this news.  Upon this news, Burak said:

Friends then we should work faster.  

Cristiano agreed, saying:

Yes guys, we can do that.

Everyone started thinking about something.  Suddenly Alejandra yelled to find the vaccine, and to Harry, Harry went in before you appeared to the guards and gather information about the vaccine from the science committee.  If we can go to every country and do the same, we will find the vaccine. 

Meanwhile, Cristiano distracts the virus. Anna, Burak and Alejandra tried to inform people as best they could. Harry and Cristiano needed to be fast.  They acted as quickly as they could, but then something happened.

Chapter -5 

Some More Trouble!

                                   Class 3A

He  coughed often and he couldn't breathe. He was nearly panting. With his weak voice, he said to Harry: ' I am afraid I caught that damned virus! Please, call for an ambulance. I need a doctor! I can't br...... Please, help me!'
Harry didn't know what to do. He was scared and petrified. He could not believe his friend had caught the virus. He said : 'Don't worry! I will call for an ambulance and once in hospital everything will be all right!

A sad thought occurred to him:' Cristiano suffers from immunodeficiency. I don't have time to waste. I must act immediately and alert the others.
  

He called for an ambulance. 'Nobody answered. He tried again and again until a voice replied. Bad news! No ambulance was available. What could he do? He had to make a decision!
Cristiano was feeling weaker and weaker and his conditions were getting worse and worse. Suddenly, Harry had an idea: 'Alejandra can help him with her elasticity she can  carry him to the nearest hospital! 
Alejandra left her friends Burak and Anna and headed towards Harry as soon as she knew about Cristiano's health conditions. So, before she got closer to Cristiano, Alejandra decided to don an anti-Covid protective suit. She gently picked up Cristiano and put him in her arms. With her superpower she started to run superfast and reached the hospital in the blink of an eye.  

Cristiano arrived in hospital on death's bed, so the doctors quickly put him on oxygen. Meanwhile, also Burak and Anna arrived. Now, all the superheroes were together again facing another trouble. Their friend was in terrible conditions. Moreover, they were worried about themeselves. They could have caught the virus from Cristiano! What an awful situation! They felt powerless for the very first time in their lives. It was true they were superheroes but they were also humans. They could suffer and die like everybody else. They had to be sure they could continue their mission and, above all,  to be sure they hadn’t caught the virus and run the risk to compromise others’ health. Anna said: ‘We are near a hospital after all. Why don’t we take a Covid 19 Rapid Test?   

They looked at one another and with a lingering gaze they headed to the Emergency Room. 

While going Anna added:’We are all in this together. We have nothing more to do for now. Let’s hope everything is ok with our health and we won’t turn down our challenge! I am sure,  in a way or another, we will win our struggle!

        End of the Chapter 5

Chapter - 6

Alejandra, Anna, Burak and Harry were waiting for any news about Cristiano and their own tests results at the hospital’s waiting room.

They were really nervous and worried, if any of them tested positive, their mission to help the world would have to be stopped. It was a weird mix of feelings for all of them, they couldn´t believe what was happening because they had followed all the safety rules. 

Anna knew that her friends mood was down, so she tried to cheer them up by telling them how she had discovered her superpowers: 

“It was a normal day at school, I was 8 years old … my friends and I were playing dodgeball at the playground and it was very fun. My team won because I could avoid every ball; I didn’t know it then but I was using my power while avoiding every single ball that the other team threw at me. I was so proud of myself.

When the playtime was over and we went back to class I could see the teacher saying that we were going to have a Maths test the week after. I thought everyone had heard her but, by my surprise, 2 minutes later she said the same thing again so I asked the reason and her answered was that she hadn´t told us anything before.

When I got home it happened again with my mother, twice more! At the end of the day I searched on the Internet what’s the name of seeing things before they happen and I learned that its name was Clairvoyance and it was a SUPER POWER!”

It was a normal day at school, I was eight years all... my friends and I were playing dodgeball at the playground...

When Anna ended her story the team looked a little bit less worried so Alejandra started her story: 

“I was at dance class two years ago, when my ballet teacher congratulated me because I was able to put my leg higher than anyone of my classmates. I saw myself in the mirror and my teacher was right, it was amazing! But that is not all, when I was studying at the living room my pen rolled out of the table and along the floor for 3 meters. When I saw the pen, my arm grew 3 meters and I grabbed the pen. I was excited, ‘cause the super power I’d always wanted to have was elasticity”

"I was at a dance class when my ballet teacher congratulated me baecause I was able to put my leg higher than anyone..."

Listening to these stories made them feel less anxiety so Burak started: 

“Mine is awesome, I was walking home after school when I saw bullies picking on a little boy. I couldn’t leave him alone so I asked the bullies to stop; they refuse to leave, at that moment I started feeling super-strength so as I didn’t want to punch them I took an abandoned car which was near and put it above my head. They got so scared that they ran away as fast as they could”
