As I walk through the wide hallways, with dark circles under my eyes, exhausted from staying up too late doing my thesis while carrying my bag, I have finally arrived at my dorm, I flopped down at my bed and my roommate is staring at me. She looked at me in confusion.
“What have you been doing all night? You look deranged,” asked Areum.
I looked at her with eyes half-closed and said sleepily “I’ve been staying up to finish my thesis.”
“But I thought you were done?” asked Areum.
“I was, my professor, told me to redo it because apparently according to him my thesis is child’s play,” I complained.
“Oh, that’s unpleasant,” said Areum.
“Yeah, I am going to wash my clothes now because they smell,” I got up from my bed, took my mask, and went to the laundry room.
As I walked past through people, I heard people whispering about me, behind one of the cornered walls. I walked closer and stayed to listen.
“Ugh if the Chinese people would have eaten something normal, everything would be just fine. No social distancing, no masks, it's just so annoying I literally hate them. China eats so many disgusting things, they’re the worst,” grumbled Charlotte.
“Yes, I agree with you. They are so weird and disgusting. Chinese people have disgusting food, and no culture at all,” said June.
I scoffed, turned, and slammed June's hand against the wall. “Chinese people are not cultured huh? China is more than ‘disgusting foods’ as you say.”
“I doubt that, all I know is they are sickening and gross,” June said while her back is against the wall.
“No, you are just uneducated this is a warning, if you disrespect my country again you are gone.”
June rolled her eyes; I pressed her hand harder against the wall and June grunted.
“Ugh ok fine,” said June.
“You too,” I said as I glared at Charlotte.
I let go of June's hand and it was red. She clung on to Charlotte while rubbing her wrist and walked away through the dark hallway.
I finished washing my clothes and went back to finish my other assignments by midnight. I woke up tired and looked at my phone. I saw a text message from an unknown number that said “Meet me in the basketball court outside at 5:30 PM, Wednesday. Wednesday is today. I don’t even know who the person is.
I looked at Areum and said, “Hey Areum, do you recognize this number?”
“Um no I don’t, why do you ask?” said Areum while sitting in a chair holding her phone.
“I got a strange text message from someone, they told me to meet them at 5:30 PM at the basketball court outside. “
“It’s up to you if you want to go or not, just be careful, call me when you need help, I can’t bear to lose you,” said Areum worriedly looking concerned.
“Don't worry, remember I can fight, my coach taught me well and I promise if anything happens to me I will call you,” I said to Areum calming her down.
“Ok Yu Yan,” she smiled at me and I smiled back.
Around 5:25 PM I went to the basketball court outside and waited patiently. Suddenly I heard a scream. “Hey you, Ling-ling go back to your country, such an ugly Asian,” someone said from afar
I turned around and saw June, Charlotte, and their boyfriend's Trace and Simon standing behind me. I looked down and scoffed.
“Do you know that I am Canadian and Chinese, I am a part of this country” I explained.
“I don’t care, go back to your country we do not want any other colonizing our country so get out and leave,” said June while glaring at me.
I rolled my eyes and opened my phone to text Areum to come here. I sent the message and suddenly Charlotte grabbed me by the hair and pushed me to the floor. I grabbed her arm and slammed her to the floor. June helped her get up and I smirked at her.
