my ABC book is designed to help you learn more quickly what I learned in my US History class this semester with Ms. Diaz.

Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln as president, he modernized the American economy, abolished slavery, and managed to hold the country together after the Civil War.
He is known for:
● Be the 16th President of the United States of America.
● Leading the United States during the Civil War avoiding the disintegration of the nation.
● Abolish slavery and modernize the country's economy.

Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights was the first ten amendments to the Constitution of the United States. It has been helping American run its government since 1791. Ranks alongside the Constitution and the Declaration and the Declaration as one of the nation's most treasured documents.

Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was one of the last major involvements in national affairs of Senators Henry Clay, Webster, and Calhoun.
~North and south argued over the mexican cession.
~South threatend to secede
~California enters as a free state with original borders

Declaration of Independence
The declaration of independence is celebrated on July 4 and approved on July 4, 1776. The declaration of independence emphasizes two themes: individual rights and the right of revolution.
~Many people know the Declaration was written, but most people never question or understand exactly why there was a need for a formal document. If the colonies wanted foreign allies to aid them in separation, they first had to legally declare themselves independent of Britain.
It was vital that each of the 13 colonies come together as a single body. A colony by itself wouldn’t be taken seriously by a world power like France, but the Thirteen together as one nation would. This was groundbreaking at the time, as each colony viewed itself as a singular entity, much like the countries of Europe.

Emancipation Proclamation
It was an order made by Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 in which African American slaves became free.
~The Proclamation ordered the freedom of all slaves in ten states
~About 25,000 to 75,000 slaves in regions where the United States Army was active were immediately emancipated

French & Indian War
When the war began France controlled the Louisiana territory and Canada. The fighting between the French and the British began in 1754, but war was not officially declared until 1756. The French and Natives of North America fought as allies against the British at the start of the French and Indian War. The French lost the war.
~1,512 killed in action 1,500 died of wounds 10,400 died of disease.
~The French and Indian War began over the specific issue of whether the upper Ohio River valley was a part of the British Empire, and therefore open for trade and settlement by Virginians and Pennsylvanians, or part of the French Empire.

George Washington
He was the first president. He was a very loved person. George was also the commander of the confederate army.They supported protective tyranny, a stronger government, and protection of minority rights.
~He was the first president to free his slaves after his death.
~During his term of government, 5 more states were added to the Union: North Carolina (1789), Rhode Island (1790), Kentucky (1792), Vermont (1791), and Tennessee (1796).

Henry David Thoreau
American essayist,poet,practical philosopher and transcendentalist. He wrote the "Civil Disobedience" that was a passive resistance and supported abolitionism

Inauguration
An inauguration is a formal ceremony to mark the beginning of a major public leader's term of office. US Presidents give an inauguration speeches at the beginning of there term in office. The ''Inaugural address'' is a speech given during this ceremony which informs the people of his/her intentions as a leader.

James Madison
He was the fourth president of United States. Began his political career as a federalist,joining forces with Alexander Hamilton during the debate over the Constitution.
~He was one of the authors of the Federalist Papers and a staunch advocate of strong and central government
~ He was a critical of excessive power in central government and left the Federalist Party to join Thomas Jefferson in leading the Republican Party.
~He was referred to as the “Father of the Constitution.”

Klu Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan is a hate group. It was started in the southern United States on March 3, 1865. Most of its hate has been towards African Americans, but it has also attacked Catholics, Jews and immigrants. It has sought to keep "white power", often through very violent acts such as killing people.
~The first Ku Klux Klan broke up and does not exist anymore. However, other groups with the same name and the same ideas have been created.
~

Louisiana Purchase
The U.S under Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory from France, under the rule of Napoleon in 1803. The U.S paid $15 million for the Louisiana Purchase and Napoleon gave up his empire in North America.
~The U.S. gained control of Mississippi trade route and doubled its size.
~When Spain later objected to the United States buying Louisiana from France, Madison responded that the United States had first approached Spain to buy the property, but Spain itself had told him that the United States would have to deal with France for the territory from Louisiana
Magna Carta
This document signed by King John of England in 1215 is the cornerstone of English justice and law. It declared that the King and government were bound by the same laws as other citizens of England.
~The purpose of he Magna Carta is to curb the power of the king and make him govern by the old English laws that had prevailed before the Normans came.
~Other names for Magna Carta is Magna Charter of the Great Charter

North America
North America is the third largest of the seven continents. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. North America is dominated by its three largest countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Central America and the Caribbean are usually considered part of North America
~Population: 528,720,588
~Area: 9,540,198 square miles
~Ranking: It is the third largest and the fourth most populous continent

The Oregon Trail
The Oregon Trail is a 2200-mile historic east-west large wheeled wagon route and emigrant trail that connected the Missouri River to valleys in Oregon.
~The Oregon Trail helped the United States implements its cultural goal of Manifest Destiny. The five to six month journey spanned over half the continent Between 1841 and 1869.
~The Oregon Trail was used by settlers migrating to the Pacific Northwest

Patrick Henry
He was a Virginia lawyer and politician. He was one of the leading figures of the American Revolutionary period. He was an outspoken opponent of the Stamp and Townshend Acts.
~He gave his famous "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" speech to the Virginia Assembly in 1775.

Quakers
A very religious group who settled in Pennsylvania. They were very tolerant and nonviolent.
~ Quakers believe that there is something of God in everybody.
~They do not have clergy or rituals and their meetings for worship are often held in silence.
