For Jarrett

Early one morning, even before the earliest of birds awoke, the first snow of Winter began to fall and coated the forest in a blanket of glistening snowflakes.
From his warm den, a young fox emerged to find the forest had magically transformed into a Winter wonderland overnight. The fox beamed from ear to ear.
"Finally, Winter is here!" It was his favorite season.
Eager to play in the new fallen snow, the young fox trotted into the forest.

While searching for the perfect place to play, he came upon a clearing where the Autumn grass had yet to be covered by the snow. There, he found a single sleeping daisy, wilted and frail.
The fox approached her slowly.
"Excuse me," the fox whispered, awaking the daisy from her slumber, "why are you sleeping? Winter is here!"
The tired flower simply replied, "Daisies don't bloom in Winter. Wake me up when it is Spring again."

"Spring?" The fox thought. "That's months away!"
He did not understand how anybody could sleep through his favorite season. The young fox became filled with determination.
"This is no time for sleeping, we have much to do!" The fox gently dug his claws into the hardening soil and scooped the tiny daisy out of the earth, roots and all.
Enthusiastic, the fox proclaimed, "I promise to show you the beauties of Winter, and then you will have to bloom!"

Treading lightly to not drop the delicate flower, the fox came upon a large hill. He climbed to the very top as fast as he could, laid on his back, and began to roll!

He clutched the daisy firmly as they tumbled through the snow towards the bottom.
"Wasn't that fun?" the fox said gleefully through
his giggling.

"I'm a bit dizzy now," the daisy answered. "Could you please put me back where I was? Daisies don't bloom in Winter."
Taking some time to think, the young fox came up
with a new plan.
"Maybe making new
friends will help!"

He brought the daisy deep into the forest where all kinds
of Winter animals were playing together in the snow.
The fox and the daisy joined their new friends in the snowy fun.
"I have never seen animals like these in Spring," the daisy said with a gentle smile. "But I must go back to sleep soon. Daisies don't bloom in Winter."

More persistent than ever, the fox decided to show the daisy all the wonders that Winter had to offer. They chased falling snowflakes and burrowed tunnels through the snow. He even taught her how to make a snow angel!

Overwhelmed with excitement, the daisy exclaimed, "I never knew how much fun Winter could be!
I wish I could keep having fun with you, but sadly, daisies don't bloom in Winter."
As the day neared its end, the fox had one more idea.
Still carefully holding the tiny flower, he ran as fast as he could to a clearing past the woods where the open white wonderland stretched for miles.
There, they watched the first sunset of Winter together.
