Face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying can often happen alongside each other. But cyberbullying leaves a digital footprint – a record that can prove useful and provide evidence to help stop the abuse.

Making a Joke? Or Bullying? What is the difference?
Making a joke and bullying a person are two very different actions, but sometimes they can be confused for one another.
“So I guess to me joking would be actually joking as in somebody told somebody a specific type of joke,” says West counselor Mrs. Howe.
“Bullying is an action that is repeated over and over again and, it hurts a person, it could be physical, mental, or emotional [bullying]” explains Mrs. Howe.

Bullying is when you say something hurtful and you mean it and even if it’s in a laughy way it’s still bullying,”
Bullies are mainly people who are not your friend even if they say they are.
People that are your friends don’t bully you, so if they are truly a good friend they would not do that. If a friend is bullying you then they are really not your friend,” says counselors.
Bullying happens to a lot of people and most of the time the bully is not a friend or not a true friend to the victim.

Who should I talk to ?
Ask help from someone you trust such as your parents, a close family member or another trusted adult(a counsellor or your favourite teacher).
And if you are not comfortable talking to someone you know, search for a helpline in your country to talk to a professional counsellor.

If the bullying happens on a social platform, start with blocking the bully and formally reporting their behaviour on the platform itself. Social media companies have to keep their users safe.
It can be helpful to collect evidence – text messages and screen shots of social media posts – to show what’s really happening.
If you feel yourself in immediate danger, then you should contact the police or emergency services in your country. Yasemin KAPLAN

HOW CAN YOU SHARE IT WITH YOUR PARENTS?
If you are exposed to cyberbullying, you should definitely share it with your parents. These ideas may help you;
*Be clear about what's going on
*Talk about how you feel. Do you feel hurt?
*Talk to your parents when they are not busy.
*You can think about the solutions together.
*Maybe you know more about this stuff than your parents do. If that’s the case, tell them what you know about cyberbullying, and share websites and other resources that you think will be helpful

Is cyberbullying punished?
There are schools that take cyberbullying seriously. So, report to the school in case of any cyberbullying.
Although laws against cyberbullying are relatively new and few, people have a right to and to have the offender held accountable.

In some countries, cyberbullying victims can benefit from some rights such as seeking protection, prohibiting communication from a specific person and restricting the use of electronic devices used by that person for cyberbullying.
However, it would be better to focus on repairing the harm and mending the relationship than punishment.

Are internet companies responsible?
Many of them are introducing ways to address it and better protect their users with new tools, guidance and ways to report online abuse.
Technology companies have a responsibility to protect their users especially children and young people.
It is up to all of us to hold them accountable when they’re not living up to these responsibilities.

Digital technology is now a central part of most young peoples’ lives. Parents need to show patience and curiosity about their child’s online behavior.
Parents must be clear that bullying is always unacceptable. But, they should also try to see the situation through their child’s eyes, as young people may not have the maturity to fully consider the consequences of their actions.
Children will often try to justify their behavior, so a parent’s role is to help them develop empathy for others.

This requires ongoing discussions and encouraging the child to reflect on how their behavior makes others feel. It is unhelpful for the child to be shamed or to ban access to the technology. This kind of response prevents the child from opportunities to learn responsible online behavior.
If the behavior continues, then it may be necessary to involve health professionals and the child’s school. Strengthening parents’ skills in effectively managing issues of cyberbullying is an important part of the solution.
