This story was inspired by a young boy I worked with in the summer of 2012, who I am happy to call my friend. This individual
opened my eyes to the aspects of Asperger's Syndrome. Not only
did I learn lots from him, but I believe my persistence and consistency
helped him grow as an individual. This boy is inspiring and
is someone who has definitely changed my outlook on life as an
educator and towards students with exceptionalities. Working with this
young boy has made me realize the power of influence. Working
together and building a relationship throughout the summer
created a wonderful experience for both of us.

This is Davy, he is an eight year old donkey
who lives in a barnyard on Daffodil Drive in
Donnaville, Ontario.
Davy lives on a farm with his mom Doris,
his dad Dillon and his Grandpa Jack. His
cousins Henry and Harry are horses who live
a few stalls down in the barn.

Everyday Davy sees the other animals playing
together in the barnyard and desperately wants
to be a part of the fun and be their friend.
Sometimes Davy tries to play with the other
animals, but when the others let him play Davy
becomes very anxious and he has a hard time
controlling his behavior. He bucks and kicks
and hee-haws vary loudly. That is why Davy is
never picked for teams or asked to play.

Hee -Haw

Davy spends much of his time alone
while searching for and chasing
grasshoppers all around the barnyard.
He knows everything about them. Davy
knows that there are 10,000 different
types, what the different colours mean,
and where they live. He even knows
how many grasshoppers live in his
barnyard.

One day, after trying to play Farm-
Volleyball with the other animals, Davy
was rejected, so he went to talk to his
Mom.

One day, after trying to play farmvolly
with the other animals, but was
rejected, Devy went to talk to his Mom.

Mom???

“Mom” Davy said, “Why don’t any of the other
barnyard animals want to play with me?”
“Why do you ask Davy?” his Mom said.
Davy sighed and looked at the floor, “Well
whenever I try to play with the other animals,
I’m always picked last. Sometimes I’m not even
picked at all. Henry and Harry pick me once in
awhile, but they have to be nice to me because
they’re family.”

“Davy” his Mom said, “Lets go for a walk.”
“O.K,” Davy said in an unsure voice, ”is there
something wrong?”
“No, no darling, I just want to talk to you
about something, that’s all.” said his mother
and she began to walk away.
So Davy put the grasshopper down that he
had riding on his back and galloped to catch
up with her.

“What is it Mom?” Davy cried.
“Davy, do you remember when the vet came to
the farm last week? Well the vet spent some
extra time with you when he did your check up. I
asked him to do this because I am worried about
your challenges in Sunday School. You know,
your trouble with reading and the way light and
sound bother you.”
“Am I sick?” Asked Davy.
“Oh No” said his Mom, “Just extra special.” Davy
looked at his mother with a puzzled look on his
face.

???

Mother cleared her throat “Davy, the vet told
me that you have Asperger’s Syndrome,
which is an autism spectrum disorder.” “Do
you remember Charlie Chicken form the
farm down the road? Well he has a form of
autism as well."
Davy interrupted, “So we are the same?!” “I
Love Charlie, I want to be his best friend!”

Please print neater

“Not exactly” said Davy’s mother. “Only 1
in 165 individuals have a form of Autism
Spectrum Disorder and they have a hard
time focusing in school and they also have
a hard time writing.”
“Is that why Teacher Turkey always asks
me to try and print my work neater?”
asked Davy.
“Yes.” said mother.

“Have I always had this?” asked Davy.
"Well," said mother, "you have, but most
people don’t know they have it until they are
older like you."
Davy was quiet. He just walked behind his
mother.

They walked and they walked...

Davy stopped. “Does this mean I have to stop
playing with other barnyard animals because I’m
different?” Asked Davy.
“Of course not.” said his mother, “Knowing this
special information about you will help us and
others with certain things."
“Oh, O.K,” said Davy. “Can I go back and chase
grasshoppers again? There are 206 living in our
barnyard you know!”
“Sure Davy," mother said with a smile on her face.

As the days went on, Davy continued to try
and play with the other animals, but was
not successful. When Davy shouted “YOU
SHOULD LET ME PLAY BACUSE I AM
DIFFERENT.” Clairissa the cow shouted
back, “NO YOU’RE NOT! YOU LOOK THE
SAME AS THE OTHER DONKEYS.”
Just like all the other times when Davy
experienced rejection, he kicked and
bucked and hee-hawed really loud.
