A spoon in water - the phenomenon of light refraction

Pour almost full water into a glass vessel and place a teaspoon in it diagonally. Looking from the side, we see a shifted image of a spoon in the water and it seems to us that the spoon is cut. In a certain position, we see a double image of a spoon. When we look from above, we get the impression that the spoon is curved and the length of the immersed part of the spoon seems shorter than it really is. Additionally, you can see the image by reflecting the light from the bottom of the vessel.

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE:

Take a clean plastic or glass container. Fill the container with about 1/4 of water. Take some vegetable oil and pour some of it into the bowl, filling it about 3/4. Leave some space at the top so that it does not splash out of the container. I read that you can use other oils, but vegetable oils work better. Add about 8 to 10 drops of food coloring. Remember that the colors will go together, so be careful with your mix. You can also use one color if you want. Food coloring droplets will fall through the oil and float onto the water. After a few seconds, when the colors mix with water, they will create a cool show. If necessary, divide a tablet into several pieces and drop it to fit inside the bottle. A few seconds later… BAM!… You have a DIY lava lamp.
