The Cyclops

...In his next adventure, Odysseus describes his
encounter with the Cyclops named Polyphemus,
Poseidon's one-eyed monster son. Polyphemus
may represent the brute forces that any hero
must overcome before he can reach home.

Now Odysseus must rely on the special
intelligence associated with his name.
Odysseus is the cleverest of the Greek heros
because he is guided by the goddess of
wisdom, Athena.

It is Odysseus's famed curiosity that leads him to
the Cyclops cave and that makes him insist on
waiting for the barbaric giant....

We lit a fire, burnt an offering and took some
cheese to eat; then
sat in silence around
the embers, waiting.

We heard the ground shaking, andfootsteps were getting closer and closer...

Polyphemus entered the cave with his sheep and we
scattered fast to the far wall.

After Polyphemus entered the cave, he rolled a
huge rock over the doorway. And then he did
some chores. When all these chores were
done, he poked the fire, heaping on
brushwood. In the glare of the fire, he saw
them. 'Strangers,' he said, 'who are you? And
where from? What brings you here by seaway-
-a fair traffic? Or are you wandering rogues,
who cast your lives like dice, and ravage other
folks by sea?

Who are you?Where did you
come from?

We are from Troy
They told polyphemus that they were from Troy, and
why they were there. They also told polyphemus that
he should be treating them with proper hospitality, and
when they said that, polyphemus got angry because the
Cyclopes don't listen to the other god's and so they
don't really believe in proper hospitality.

Polyphemus then picked up two of Odysseus's men and
started beating their brains out by smashing them on
the floor, then he ate them. Then he fell asleep. Just as
he fell asleep Odysseus drew out his sword and was
going to kill polyphemus. But then odysseus realized, if
he killed polyphemus now, who would move the huge
boulder from the doorway? So they waited dreadfully
until the morning.

When the morning came, polyphemus did some more
chores, and then just as he was leaving the cave, he
picked up a few more men and ate them. Then on his
way out he closed the big rock on the door behind them.

After polyphemus left the cave, Odysseus came up with
a plan... Odysseus and his men were going to make a
stake to stab polyphemus in the eye. So they made a
stake with a point at the end. And they held it in the fire
to toughen it. Then they hid it, in the back of the
cavern.
