Chapter One:The Arrival

The year is 2123. Lo and Zan have been sent to the
distant planet, Kappa Faa, to explore its environment.
Their mission is to determine whether this planet has
the capabilities to host human life.

Lo, I suggest we get moving. We have a lot of ground to
cover and mission control
expects the first report tomorrow
morning.
Let's start by heading towards that beach. If we can identify the
liquid we may be able to determine
whether human life can survive here.

First, let's take a sample of this liquid. Mark it "Solution
One" and write the location.
Now we will use our redlitmus paper to determine
if the liquid is a base. It will
be basic if the PH is above
7.
If it does not change the paperblue, then it not a base. Then we
will use our blue litmus paper to
determine if it is an acid. It will be
an acid if the PH is below 7.

Lo and Zan test the liquid. The liquid turns the blue
litmus paper red. This means the liquid is an acid. The
two explorers take note of this and move on explore
more land.

Lo and Zan walk up the beach until they hear a loud
roaring. They see a waterfall plunging into the ocean.
Let's test this liquid too. Maybe it is a different
liquid than the ocean.
Although this liquid does seem to have different
properties than the ocean, the
blue litmus paper is turning red
once again.
So this liquid is an acid too.
Lo and Zan follow the river. After a while, they see a
puddle of liquid amongst a group of trees. After testing
the liquid, they discover that it is a base.

This time, our blue litmus paperturned red, while our red litmus paper
did nothing at all.
At least we knowthis planet has acids
and bases. Both are
essential to life.

It was getting darker and darker, so Lo and Zan decided
to was best to head back to their ship and get some
rest. They would resume their exploration when it was
light again.

The next morning Lo and Zan woke up and headed
into the opposite direction. They headed away from
the beach towards the tall mountains. On the way, the
found a mysterious looking lake.

Be careful Zan, wedon't know what kind
of liquid is in there.

Well, I've test the red litmuspaper and nothing happened.
I know it is not a base. Now I
am testing the blue litmus paper
to see it if is an acid.
The blue litmuspaper is turning red.
This lake is an acid just
like the ocean below.

A few moments later, huge raindrops began falling
from the sky. Lo and Zan hurried to find more solid
ground.

Let's get outof here!

Once Lo and Zan were back on solid ground, they
took out a vial to catch some of the rain. Once they
had enough, they decided to use the litmus paper to
test the PH level of the rain.

This is very interesting Lo, The red litmus paper is turning
blue. This means the rain is basic

Oh, look therain stopped.

I have an idea Zan. Let's go back to that lake
and test it again. When an acid
and a base mix, they can create
a neutral. Let's see if this has
happened.

Sure enough, when Lo and Zan tested the lake
again, it was neutral.
The red litmus paperdidn't change. And the
blue litmus paper didn't
change.

This means the lakeis now neutral. This
is very interesting.

Lo and Zan knew that neutral PH meant the liquid had a
PH of 7. They were excited because water has a PH of
7.

We should collect some samples
and get back to the ship.
Mission Control will
want to know about this.

Let's get one more liquid sample
to test for Mission
Control.

While they were walking back to their ship, Lo and
Zan saw a small pond.
The red litmus paper is turning blue. This pond is
basic.

Back at their ship, Lo and Zan sent their first report to
Mission Control and began further tests on the
mysterious liquids.
It seems when therain water mixed
with the lake, a chemical
change occurred.

The liquid from the lakeafter the rain storm is a
different liquid than it was
before the rain storm.

Good Job explorers! We have found some
very interesting chemical
and physical properties of
these liquids. Keep up the
good work.

Thanks Mission Control. We will
send you a new report
tomorrow.
