Activity 1 - Repeated Reading

Students receive take home books to keep at home. These are texts read together in group. Have your child reread a short section 2-3 times to build fluency. If they hesistate on a word for longer then 5 seconds, provide the word to them, have them repeat it and continue. As students accuracy increases, add in additional pages until the student finishes the text.
This can be spread across multiple days.
Activity 2 - Echo Reading
As students develop a high level of accuracy with their take home texts, you can help reinforce fluency with echo reading. Start by reading a sentence, modeling appropriate fluency. Students will repeat the sentence, 'echoing' the fluency you demonstrated. As students demonstrate fluency, try increasing
the difficulty from one sentence to
multiple, or a short paragraph.
Reinforce pausing between sentences
w which will aid comprehension.

Activity 3 - Flashcards

Using the word cards in you child's blue folder, help to build automaticity with these 'see them and say them' words. Shuffle the cards and show them, one at a time. If your child correctly identifies the word within 3 seconds, respond "Yes, the word is ____". If they respond incorrectly, or hesitate over 3 seconds you can respond, "The word is _____. Say ___". You can reshuffle and repeat this process 2-3 times.
Activity 4 - Word Sort
Using the word cards, have students create categories and sort their words in different ways. Some examples include include initial sound, vowel sound, blends, meaning, etc.
See your child's Word Work
notebook for ideas and the
most recent phonics skill as
ideas for categories.

Activity 5 - Reading Calendar
Help your child set at home goals to track their reading progress. It is important that your child reads every night for at least 20 minutes.
Using a calendar or another visual is a great way
t to help your child conceptualize their progress.
This can be a great tie-in to any at home weekly
or monthly incentives. Your can offer special
privileges or rewards to positively reinforce the
committment to reading.
