Mateo was nervous about his first day at a US school. He didn't know how he would fit in or how he would do it because of his proficiency in English.

Mrs. Sanchez was very excited to meet her new student and even made a "welcome" basket full of goodies for Mateo.

When Mateo arrived at Mrs. Sanchez's classroom, he was welcomed by the whole class with open arms!

Mateo was thrilled to be welcomed and excited to learn! Mrs. Sanchez told Mateo he arrived at a great time because they just started reading "The Outsiders." Mateo was nervous because he knew his reading skills were not the best. So he pulled Mrs. Sanchez to the side and expressed his concerns to her.

Mrs. Sanchez told Mateo not to worry that she will help him! Mrs. Sanchez started first with, "accuracy." She explained to Mateo that accuracy is very important in reading. "Reading with very few mistakes is good accuracy. Being able to understand what is being read and comprehend the words in the texts is very important in accuracy."

Next, Mrs. Sanchez told Mateo about "prosody and tempo." She explained to Mateo how important it is to read with an expression. She explained further by saying " a good reader knows when to take pauses, has a good rhythm and tone." Mrs. Sanchez told Mateo to read as if he was in the book and when he gets scared show it or when he's happy to show it as well!

Lastly, Mrs. Sanchez explained to Mateo how "comprehension" shows what the reader understood from the text. " Mateo, this is why I use repeated reading in my classes because this allows for students to reread several times to better understand what is being told." 

Mateo then tells Mrs. Sanchez, " What if I still don't comprehend what is trying to be conveyed in the novel Mrs. Sanchez?" Mrs. Sanchez, mentions " Don't worry, I always have a backup plan. Choral reading and readers theater are great strategies that I use when students still struggle after repeated reading."
