Yamin was a first-grader who just have moved from his Turkey to the United States. His father moved the family because of a Professor job he accepted. Yamin was the youngest of 3. His mother spoke no English but his Father did.

Yamin's first-grade teacher was Mrs. Dye, who was an English Teacher. Mrs. Dye quickly did research about Turkey and the Turkish Language.
Yamin was excited to build his literacy and reading skills. Mrs. Dye told Yamin that the first thing they will be learning is Metacognitive Comprehension Strategies. Mrs. Dye explained to Yamin that Metacognitive Comprehension Strategies help Yamin build an understanding of the text.

Mrs. Dye introduced the "In My Head" strategy to Yamin. She explained to Yamin how great the strategy is and how he is able to share his thoughts while reading. Since Yamin struggles with reading skills isn't the best and only knows very few words and letters this will be a great tool to help Yamin start comprehending what is being read.

Mrs. Dye, even allowed Yamin to use his home language on the handout to help translate his thoughts from the reading to the paper.

Mrs. Dye thought this would be a great tool to use since she asked Yamin to do a similar activity by asking Yamin to write his favorite fairytale in his writing journal and asking him to use "nonlinguistic representation" since Mrs. Dye knows that Yamin loves to draw.

Mrs. Dye then moved on to Cognitive Comprehension Strategies. She explained to Yamin that this will help develop his thinking skills and be able to help him better understand the text that is being read. Mrs. Dye told Yamin that a strategy she loves using is story retelling because it allows students to orally reconstruct what they read and put it in their own words.

Yamin was excited about being able to retell a fairy tale in his own words but since he lacks reading skills Mrs. Dye offered to read the fairy tale to him and help Yamin translate it into his own words by allowing Yamin to use both his home language and English.
