I woke up from an awful nightmare. I felt the hard bed. I had an idea and thought of all the creatures outside. They would freeze in the cold winter breeze. I got out of bed and felt the cold wood floor. I had an idea and I wasn’t going to stop!
The wood floor creaked under my feet. I felt a little warmth against my feet. I looked down. I saw a pup. I thought the pup got in the emergency exit in my room. When I got out of bed the pup got off the bed too. I picked up the pup and cuddled it close. I knew that I had to carry out my plan. My parents are friendly. Also my parents don’t want me and my sisters to have pets. I thought me and my sisters could dig a hole in the down stairs. There was a small uncovered of wood spot. Me and my sisters were just small enough to fit in the uncovered spot of wood. I thought that me and my sisters could dig a hole in the uncovered spot.
I went back to bed with the little pup. I tucked the pup under the covers so my parents wouldn’t find her in the morning.
I woke up with the sun shining on my face. I cuddled the little pup against me. I told the plan to my sisters. We would dig a hole in the uncovered of wood spot. I was telling the plan when one of my sisters (her name was Emily) pointed out, “We don’t have any shovels.” I thought and thought and thought. I could not think of any way we could get the shovels. We couldn’t ask our parents. They would get suspicious. Or our brothers: they would get suspicious too. Then I thought of a way! We could make shovels out of old pieces of metal and some wood.
Then I thought the puppy would probably be hungry. My parents had already checked on us early. I thought How would we feed the pup? Then I remembered that I had seen some rabbits who had died last night because of the cold winter night. Poor things. But it’s all we have. I went outside and got them. “Hmmm….” I thought. There was one little boy who was in here because there wasn’t room in the boy house. And he so happened to know how to skin. If he agreed, he could skin the rabbits for us. Then we would have food for the little puppy. Johnny said he would when I asked.
I fed the little puppy. As I fed her I thought of a name. First, I thought Dash. Then I thought that wasn’t quite right. Second, I thought of Mash. Then I thought that wasn’t quite right too. Third, I thought of Delee. Then I thought that wasn’t quite right too. Finally, I settled on Lily of the Valley, but Lily for short.
I went out of my room (that’s where I had been telling the plan and feeding the pup). After awhile the puppy got up from sleeping in my lap. When she got up I had been rocking in the living room.
I was thinking of different things, mostly about the puppy. What would I do? How would I hide her? And how would she stop whining when my parents came in? When she woke up I cuddled her even closer to me. I didn’t want my parents to take her away. There was a couple visits from my parents every day: in the early morning, in the middle of the day, and at bedtime. It was almost in the middle of the day. Maybe I could put the little puppy back to sleep before the middle of the day. Just then I felt a shiver down my spine. If they came early this morning, that means they’re going to come early every visit today. I had to put the puppy back to sleep, but how?
I quickly went up to my room. I put the puppy under my bed. There was a nice little warm spot there. I tucked her there and quickly sang to her until she fell asleep.
“Little Lily, little Lily, little Lily
You’re okay
Little Lily, little Lily
Rock up and down
Go to sleep”
Just as I got her asleep I heard the downstairs door open.
“Is anyone home?” said my mom and my dad.
“Just the wind,” I said. My parents laughed out loud.
“That one’s funny,” said my mom and dad.
I ran to meet my mom and dad in the kitchen. I told them to come in the living room. Then I called my sisters down from upstairs. They came running down, very happy because everyone loved mom and dad’s visits.
