There once was a girl named Salaya who was
beautiful and intelligent. Her eyes were deep green
and her hair the color of a sapling. Salaya lived in
New England with her two sisters who were jealous
of her beauty. One day, the Governor said to her, “I
like you! You might take my place in politics! But
what’s this… I see love for a beast in your future
that will take away your gifts.” The Governor was
interested in fortune-telling. It was not long before
the Governor’s daughter Savannah heard of her
father’s remark. She became jealous of Salaya and
decided to jeopardize her future.

Savannah hired an infamous thief to inject Salaya with a love
potion while she was sleeping. The potion would force her to fall in
love with a hideous creature. He was about to use it when she
stirred. Startled, he dropped the bottle. It smashed at his feet and
he was in love.

Love-struck, he carried sleeping Salaya to a mansion. When Salaya woke
up, she tried to run, but was spoken to by a voice, “Don’t be afraid. I won’t
hurt you. Please eat, but you can’t see me. You can’t tell your sisters about
this either or all will be lost.” Invisible servants served her and time slipped
by. She asked to see her host repeatedly, but he refused. “I want to be
loved for my personality, not for my appearance.”

Eventually Salaya’s sisters came
looking for her. They were sick with
jealously and vengeance when they
saw her new lifestyle. Salaya
confessed couldn’t see he host. “This
is the creature the Governor talked
about! You must kill it!”

That night, she snatched a dagger and
crept into the only room she was denied
access. Instead of a horrible beast, she
saw the thief asleep. Shocked, she
stepped into a puddle of the potion and
fell in love with the thief. Salaya slipped
trying to escape the room. The thief woke
up and saw her dagger. Brokenhearted,
he looked away and said, “I can’t love
someone I can’t trust.” The thief ran
away into the night.

The thief told the Savannah of the pain Salaya had caused him. She
promised revenge and decided to challenge Salaya for her love and
life. Savannah said to Salaya, “To live, you must complete three
tasks.” The first task was to sort soda cans into three piles before
sunset. She knew she couldn’t do it, so she called goats nearby.
“Help me and you can have your share.” When Savannah returned,
the task was competed. Savannah became angry.
