What is mythology?

"They are old stories about gods and heroes."

They are fairy tales that people used to believe in.

"They are stories about Zeus, Athena, and Hercules!"

They are when they explained things in a magical way.

"They are the stories that the ancient Greeks told."

They were old stories of the past, about the creation of our planet, humans, nature and so on..

Odysseus on the island of the Cyclops

When the Trojan war ended, Odysseus and his soldiers decided to return to their island, Ithaca.

They were traveling for days when they saw an island. They decided to go down.

There is a cave here. Come on!

Odysseus and his men looked inside the cave and they saw that nobody was there. So they went into it and found some food, like goat cheese. They started eating it.

The Cyclops arrived and found Odysseus and his men inside his cave, while they were eating his  goat cheese. He was really angry with them! .

Who are you? What do you want in my cave?

My name is Nobody. We are not enemies.

I will eat you all. 

I will eat you last!

The Cyclops closed the entrance of the cave with a huge rock and no one could move it.

Odysseus, what will we do? We will all die. We cannot escape. We have to kill him.

Ιf we kill him, we will never leave. We cannot move the rock. I will find a solution.

I found it!!! We'll give him wine to drink, until he gets drunk.

This is a gift for you: drink my wine!

Odysseus thought about how to go out and escape from the cave.

As soon as Cyclops drank the wine, he fell asleep.

Quick with the wood!

 He’s sleeping now!

Yes, Odysseus! 

We’re quite ready!

When the Cyclops fell asleep, Odysseus blinded him with a wood..

AAAAHHHH, I CAN'T SEE !!

Odysseus, how do we get out of the cave?

Odysseus and the soldiers tied themselves under the sheep, so they could get out of the cave without being caught by the Cyclops. In fact the giant had opened his cave to let go out his sheep, before.

Odysseus and the soldiers ran and boarded the ships and immediately left the island.

The Cyclops threw a huge rock and sank some ships.

The Cyclops begged his father Poseidon, the god of the sea, to punish Odysseus because he blinded him.

         Italy presents..

Once upon a time there was only Chaos. Then the Earth Gea was born. After a while She married the Sky Uranus. 

They were hugging each other all the time. 

Later many children were born, but  Uranus was so jealous that He wanted to kill them. 

A son called Chrono hurt Uranus with a small sickle, so the Sky ran away high up.. that’s why the sky is so far from our planet. 

From his wounds many drops of water fell and they created seas and oceans..

One of Gea and Uranus' sons was Zeus. He became the Head of all the Greek Gods and Goddesses.

I am Zeus, the Head of all the Greek Gods and Goddesses! I am powerful ! 

At that time Greek Gods and Goddesses lived on Mount Olympus, in Greece. 

Zeus was the Head of all the Gods and Goddesses.  

His symbol of power was the Lightning.

At your orders, Zeus!

Here we are, Zeus ! 

Prometheus and Epimetheus, come here now!

One day Zeus called two Titans who were allied with him, Prometheus and Epimetheus. They were brothers.

Zeus asked them to create animals and human creatures.

This is a beautiful cat! I like creating different animals, using mud.

Epymetheus started creating animals with mud. They were bautiful and of different sizes and species.

This is a man! 

It’s really magnificent ! 

I love it! 

Now I’ll create also a woman..

Prometheus created human creatures always using mud.

He liked them a lot. 

He created men and women. 

Men and women lived happily in a village, building huts.

Prometheus was so proud of his creation that decided to give humans special gifts. He stole Intelligence, Creativity  and Ability from the Gods. But he also stole the Fire from God Hephaestus. 

He gave all to men and women he created.

When Zeus knew what Prometheus did, he was so angry that decided to take revenge. He thought a lot about how.

At first Zeus had Prometheus tied to a mountain. Everyday an  hungry eagle ate his liver. Prometheus was in pain each day, because his liver was growing back and the eagle was eating it everyday. This revenge lasted forever.

Ahhhh! 

My liver! Don’t eat 

my liver! 

But Zeus thought another revenge.  First he asked Hephaestus to create a really beautiful girl. She was called Pandora.

Then Zeus presented Pandora to Epimetheus. He fell in love with her and they got married. 

After that Zeus gave Pandora a beautiful  closed vessel. He told her not to open it. She answered she never would do that. 

Pandora, never open it! It’s a special vessel, only for you! 

Thank you, Zeus! I will never open it! I’ll promise! 

But Pandora was very curious. One day she opened the vessel. Then, all the evils in the world came out.

..Hope was in the box and Pandora saw it..

Fortunately Hope helps always Humans against the other evils escaped from Pandora's box..

Μια φορά κι έναν καιρό ήταν ένας άντρας που τον έλεγαν Δαίδαλο. Ζούσε στην Κρήτη με τον γιο του τον Ίκαρο.

The king of Crete, Minos, had a son that was half bull and half man. He was called Minotaur. He was dangerous and he ate men. 

Il re di Creta Minosse aveva un figlio metà toro e metà uomo, chiamato Minotauro, che era pericoloso e mangiava gli uomini.

Ο Δαίδαλος ήταν πολύ έξυπνος. Μια μέρα ο βασιλιάς ζήτησε από τον Δαίδαλο να φτιάξει έναν λαβύρινθο από τον οποίο κανένας δε θα μπορούσε να αποδράσει.

Daedalus had to build a labyrinth, where Minotaur could live. Unfortunately Daedalus and Icarus were left there, after they built it.

Dedalo doveva costruire un labirinto per il Minotauro, ma dopo averlo fatto vi fu rinchiuso con Icaro.

Daedalus thought how to get out of the labyrinth...and watching birds he had a big idea!

Dedalo pensò a come uscire dal labirinto e, guardando gli uccelli, ebbe una grande idea!

With many feathers Daedalus and Icarus created two pairs of big wings..

Con tante penne e piume Dedalo e Icaro crearono due grosse paia di ali..

…then they put them on..

..e dopo le indossarono..

They flew in the sky..

Και πέταξαν στον ουρανό..

Daedalus saw that Icarus was too near the sun and shouted him to stay far away..

Ο Δαίδαλος είδε ότι ο Ίκαρος ήταν πολύ κοντά στον ήλιο και του φώναξε να κρατηθεί μακριά.

Icarus didn't listen to his father and unfortunately the wax among the feathers melted ..

Icaro non sentì il padre e purtroppo la cera tra le penne e le piume si sciolse.. 

At the end Icarus fell into the sea.

Και ο Ίκαρος έπεσε στη θάλασσα.
