An archipelago in the Pacific, Japan is separated 

from the east coast of Asia by the Sea of Japan. 

It is approximately the size of Montana. Japan's 

four main islands are Honshu, Hokkaido, 

Kyushu, and Shikoku.

The Japanese   islands are the upper portions of vast 

mountains belonging to what is sometimes called the Cir-

cum-Pacific Ring of Fire, which stretches from Southeast 

Asia to the Aleutian Islands.

      The plains of Japan are few and small and cover only 

about 29% of the total land area. Most plains are located 

along the seacoast and are composed of alluvial lowlands, 

diluvial uplands, and low hills.

      Rivers tend to be short and swift. The longest is the 

Shinano (367 km/228 mi) in north-central Honshu, 

flowing into the Sea of Japan / East Sea. The largest lake 

is Lake Biwa, near Kyoto, with an area of 672 sq km (259 

sq mi). Lake Kussharo, in the Akan National Park of 

Hokkaido, is considered the clearest lake in the world

The Japanese people are an ethnic group native to 

Japan. Japanese make up 98.5% of the total 

population. Worldwide, approximately 130 million 

people are of Japanese descent; of these, 

approximately 127 million are residents of Japan. 

People of Japanese ancestry who live in other 

countries are referred to as nikkeijin .

Japan has a fascinating and multifaceted culture. 

Japanese culture is rich and diverse, dating back to 

10,000BC when the Jomon people first settled in 

Japan.   It is widely known for its traditional arts as 

well as its contemporary pop culture.   Today in 

Japan it is still possible to see kimono-clad women 

shuffling down the street with umbrellas overhead, 

or oversized sumo wrestlers battling it out the ring.  

A sophisticated cuisine, unique social customs, and 

refined performing and visual arts also contribute 

to a culture which has become attractive, and 

sometimes fashionable, to many foreigners.
