     In the city of Messina lived Leonato, 

a generous governor of his city, Hero, 

and Beatrice. They get news about Don 

Pedro returning from the battle with the 

handsome prince named Claudio. 

     Beatrice, acting like she doesn't 

care, asks if Benedick is returning. 

Beatrice and Benedick have always had 

a history of verbal fights. The 

messenger informs her that he is in fact 

returning.  

     Don Pedro enters Leonato's place 

with Claudio, Benedick, Balthasar, and 

Don John. Leonato being generous 

decides to let them all stay and will 

throw a masked party as a celebration.

     Everyone leaves after meeting up, 

except Claudio and Benedick. Claudio 

expresses his love for Hero, Leonato's 

daughter, to Benedick. Benedick plays 

with Claudio and says that he will 

remain a bachelor forever. 

     Don Pedro walks in on their 

exchange and finds out that Claudio 

loves Hero. Don Pedro tells Claudio that 

he will help win over Hero for him. The 

plan is to wear a mask at the party and 

pretend to be Claudio. 

     Don Pedro will win Hero and tell 

Leonato that Claudio loves her. Antonio 

overhears them talk and tells Leonato. 

Leonato speaks with Hero and prepares 

her answer to Claudio's request.

     Borachio, Don John's assistant, also 

overhears the plan and tells Don John. 

Don John, being the villain, wants to 

ruin it. His plan is to get Claudio to 

believe that Don Pedro is winning over 

Hero for himself.

     Everyone leaves for the party and 

Don Pedro leaves with Hero. Don John 

sees Claudio and asks if he was 

Benedick. Claudio responds with a yes 

and Don John informs him that Don 

Pedro is winning over Hero for himself.  

     Claudio believes what Don John has 

said and is angry with Don Pedro. 

Benedick also thinks that Don Pedro is 

wooing over Hero and tells Claudio. 

Claudio actually believes he has lost 

Hero, but Don Pedro returns to tell him 

that the plan worked.  

     Everything went according to plan 

and the wedding is decided for the week 

after. While they wait for the wedding 

day, Don Pedro wants to help set up 

Benedick and Beatrice. Don John, 

unsuccessful, comes up with another 

plan to ruin Hero and Claudio.   

     The plan is for Margaret, a servant 

that looks like Hero, to come into Hero's 

balcony with Borachio. She will be there 

and call him Claudio. Borachio will do 

the same and call Margaret as Hero. 

     Don John plans to tell the other men 

that Hero is cheating by showing them 

the staged scene. Alone at an orchard,  

Benedick is talking to himself about 

what he wants in a women. Don Pedro, 

Leonato, and Claudio walks in, so he 

has to hide.
