Today, while Maya was exploring her school’s library, she spotted a big book on the shelf. The title read, "Martin Luther King Jr.” Maya had never heard of him before and wondered, who was this man?

Maya decided to take the book home. She couldn’t wait to ask her mother about Martin Luther King Jr. and learn more about who he was.

That evening, Maya brought the big book over to her mother on the couch.  She showed her mother the book and asked, “Mom, who is Martin Luther King Jr.?”

Her mother looked at the book and smiled gently. “He was a very special man who worked hard to make the world a kinder and fairer place.”

Maya’s mother continued, “Martin Luther King Jr. wasn’t alone. There were many brave people who wanted to make things fair. One of them was Rosa Parks. She showed courage by refusing to give up her seat on a bus when the rules were unfair.”

“Another important person was John Lewis,” her mother said. “He helped lead peaceful marches to ask for equal rights.”
