Earthquakes and Seismic Waves

An earthquake makes the ground shake. This shaking happens because energy travels through the dirt in seismic waves causing vibrations that carry energy from an earthquake. The fast P-waves arrive first and give the ground a quick push. Next come the slower S-waves that make the ground shake side-to-side. These waves move outward in big circles like ripples in a pond.

Forces in Earths Crust

The Earth’s outer shell is made of giant pieces called lithospheric plates, large, moving pieces of the Earth's outer shell. These plates are always slowly sliding, pushing, and pulling against each other. When they get stuck, they create a heavy pushing force called stress: the force that builds up in rocks. Eventually, the rocks break at a crack called a fault. This sudden break lets out all the energy that was squeezed inside.

Monitoring Earthquakes

Scientists use special tools to listen to the Earth's movements. They use a machine called a seismograph, an instrument that records the shaking of the ground. This machine has a pen that stays still while the Earth shakes underneath. It helps scientists find the focus: the exact point underground where the earthquake begins. By watching these tools, we can learn how to create buildings that don't collapse while there is a earthquake.

Cause of Earthquake

Most earthquakes happen when the Earth’s giant puzzle pieces suddenly slip or break. This movement usually occurs at a fault: a break in the Earth's crust where rocks move past each other. As the plates try to move, their rough edges get snagged and stuck together. Deep underground, the rocks hold onto a lot of squeezed-up energy until they can't hold it anymore. When the rocks finally snap, they release a giant "pop" of energy that we feel as a shake.

How do Faults Form

Faults are fractures in Earth's crust caused by tectonic plate movement building up stress, which eventually causes rocks to break. These breaks, categorized as compression, tension, or shear stress, release energy as earthquakes when they suddenly move. These ruptures shape the landscape by forming mountains, valleys, and fissures

How is a Epicenter Located

An earthquake epicenter is found by using seismographs that record seismic waves. P-waves travel faster than S-waves, so scientists measure the difference in their arrival times. The time difference helps determine how far the earthquake is from each station. Circles are drawn around at least three stations using those distances as radii. The point where the circles intersect is the earthquake’s epicenter.
