ARTIFACT

Obsserving Developmet

OBSER VATION
During free-play time, the creative arts table was set up for a flower collage activity. Three children were already sitting at the table participating in the activity. Child M. approached the table and stood beside it. She watched the children at the table for a few moments. The educator asked Child M. if she would like to join the activity. Child M. looked at the educator and nodded her head. She then sat down at the table and was provided with colored paper, glue, a glue spreader, and various cut-out shapes.

At the beginning of the activity, the educator supported Child M. by guiding her hand through the steps. Together, they spread glue onto the colored paper, placed a flower shape onto the paper, and pressed it down. After this support, the educator encouraged Child M. to continue independently. Child M. used the glue spreader to apply glue and placed flower and star shapes onto the paper one at a time. After placing each shape, she pressed it down with her hand.

SHORT ANALYSIS
Child M. demonstrated development in several areas through this creative art experience. She showed social development by observing peers and choosing to join the group activity. She demonstrated fine motor development by using the glue spreader, placing small shapes, and pressing them onto the paper. Child M. also showed cognitive development through following steps, making decisions about where to place materials, and completing her artwork independently after receiving support. The educator’s guidance helped build Child M.’s confidence and encouraged her to develop independence.
