My name is James Madison ... and before you ask ...

Yes!

We really do share the same last name.

I know history books sometimes make people like me seem old, serious, and a little boring.

But what if I could tell you my story myself?

Come with me as we travel back more than 250 years to discover how one small boy grew up to help build an entire country.

Let's begin.

I was born on March 16, 1751, in Virginia.

I wasn't the tallest kid. 

I wasn't the strongest. 

In fact, I was often sick.

But there was one thing I loved more than almost anything ...

Books.

I read every chance I got. 

Every page helped me understand the world a little better. 

Back then, I had no idea those books would one day help shape the future of America.

I loved asking questions.

"Why?"

"How?"

"What if?"

Those three questions followed me everywhere.

Instead of trying to be the loudest person in the room, I tried to become most prepared.

Sometimes the greatest leaders aren't the ones who speak first.

They're the ones who listen carefully before they speak.

America had won its independence.

But winning freedom wasn't enough.

Our new country needed rules.

Without good laws, people argued.

States disagreed.

Leaders worried.

Someone had to help bring everyone together.

I wondered ...

"Could I help?"

I traveled to Philadelphia in 1787.

Imagine sitting in a room filled with some of the smartest 

people in America.

Everyone had different ideas.

Everyone wanted something different.

It wasn't easy.

But after months of listening, debating, writing, and 

rewriting ... something incredible happened.

We created the United States Constitution.

Some people even began calling me ...

The Father of the Constitution.

The Constitution became America's instruction book.

It explains

how our government works,

how leaders are chosen,

and how power is shared.

Even today, people still use the Constitution every 

single day.

Pretty amazing for a document written more than

230 years ago!

Some people worried the Constitution didn't protect individual freedoms enough.

I listened.

I agreed.

So I helped write ten important amendments.

Today you know them as ...

The Bill of Rights.

Freedom of speech.

Freedom of religion.

Freedom of the press.

And many more.

Those rights still belong to Americans today.

I even became the fourth President of the United States!

Being President wasn't always easy.

There were difficult decisions.

There was even a war.

But every day I remembered something important.

A leader serves others.

Not themselves.
