The Adventure Begins 

Meet Emma and Jake, two students who love exploring Texas. 

One morning, their teacher gives them a special challenge: travel across Texas and discover its four natural regions!

Where are we going?

Their teacher points to the map and says:  “Texas is a very large state,” she explains. “It has four major natural regions: the Mountains and Basins, Great Plains, North Central Plains, and Coastal Plains.”

The Mountains and Basins

Emma and Jake begin in the Mountains and Basins region of western Texas. 

They see tall mountains, deserts, and rocky land. The weather is often hot and dry.

Life in the Mountains and Basins 

They see tall mountains, dry deserts, and rocky land. This help them notice that there isn't much water around here. 

Next Stop: The Great Plains

The students travel north and west to the Great Plains. The land looks very different. They see wide-open spaces, grasslands, and flat areas stretching far into the distance.

Life on the Great Plains

The Great Plains are home to many grasslands and ranches. Emma and Jake see cattle grazing in large open areas. They learn that ranching is an important activity in parts of this region.

The North Central Plains

Their next stop is the North Central Plains. The land here has rolling hills, grasslands, and some forests. Emma notices that the landscape is greener than the desert they visited earlier.
