Narator: Morning air in Oakridge was crisp and filled with the sweet scent of autumn leaves. In just a few hours, the annual Autumn Fair would begin, and Oakridge Academy was set to lead the opening parade. Four inseparable friends gathered at the town hall gazebo: Fay, Bellva, Cikal, and Liora. They were supposed to guard Barnaby, the school's legendary golden owl mascot statue. But when they reached the pedestal, their hearts sank.
Cikal: "Wait, where is Barnaby? The pedestal is completely empty!"
Bellva: "He was right here twenty minutes ago! Who could have taken him?"
Liora: "This is terrible. The parade starts in less than an hour!"
Narator: While the others panicked, Fay calmly crouched down on the wooden floor. She whipped out her magnifying glass & began examining the area.
Fay: "Don't panic, everyone. Look here. Fresh yellow paint splatters, heading down the steps and toward the main street."
Bellva: (kneeling down to touch the paint) "Wait, this isn't just ordinary paint. It's Sunshine Yellow the custom color I mixed yesterday for our parade banner! I accidentally left my studio bag near the library porch last night".
Cikal: (tying his sneaker laces tight) "Say no more! I'll sprint ahead and secure the perimeter!"
Narator: Before anyone could reply, Cikal bolted down the cobblestone path like a lightning streak, with Fay, Bellva, and Liora running right behind her.
Narator: By the time the girls caught up, Cikal was already standing near the library entrance. On the grass lay Bellva’s knocked-over paint kit, but there was still no sign of the golden owl.
Cikal: "The thief was in a hurry. They dropped something else right here."
Narator: Cikal held up a heavy piece of dark brown leather. Liora took the leather piece and inspected it closely under the sunlight.
Liora: "I know this mark! It’s the emblem of the Old Archives, built beneath the town clock tower back in 1890. Hardly anyone goes down there anymore!"
Fay: (adjusting her glasses) "Then that's where our culprit is hiding. Let's move."
Narator: The four friends hurried to the base of the massive stone clock tower. Cikal pushed open the heavy iron door, which creaked loudly in the quiet morning. They descended a narrow spiral staircase that led straight to the basement. Surrounded by towering bookshelves sat Mr. Higgins, the elderly town historian, holding a paintbrush beside Barnaby the owl.
Liora & Fay: "Mr. Higgins?, why did you take Barnaby from the gazebo?"
Mr. Higgins: "(jumping in surprise) Oh dear! You kids frightened me!
I didn't mean to cause a scare! Last night, I noticed Barnaby’s golden finish was chipping terribly. I wanted to restore him in secret so he would look glorious today. I borrowed Bellva's paint, but in my hurry, I knocked over her kit and dropped my bookmark!"
Bellva: "You did an amazing job, Mr. Higgins! He looks brand new."
Cikal: "We need to get him upstairs right now the parade starts in ten minutes!"
Narator: Cikal and Mr. Higgins carefully lifted the restored golden owl, while Fay, Bellva, and Liora cleared the path ahead. Minutes later, as the marching band started playing, Barnaby took his place at the front of the parade, sparkling brightly under the autumn sun.
Fay: "Mission accomplished, team."
Liora: "The best Autumn Fair ever!"
Narator: Standing side by side, the four friends cheered, proud to have solved the mystery of the missing mascot together.
