Bottlenose DolphinAuthor: Adeeba SiddiquiIllustrated by: Adeeba Siddiqui and Ms. Cabrera's 2014-2015 clsss students

AaBottlenose dolphins live in Pacific Ocean,
Indian Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.

BbBottlenose dolphins breathe through its blowhole. Dolphins
must come to the surface to breathe air.

CcA baby bottlenose dolphin is called a calf. They
stay very close to its mother.

DdThe fin on the top of dolphin's back is called dorsal fin.

EeEcholocation tells the dolphins the shape, size, speed,
distance and location of the object or animal.

FfDolphins use tail to move forward through the water. It is
called flukes.

GgThese dolphins are social animals. They travel in groups
called pods.

Hh
At higher speeds, dolphins jump clear out of the water.
This actually helps the Bottlenose dolphin save energy.

IiDolphins are one of the intelligent animals. They have ability to
recognize and understand many things.

JjBottlenose dolphins have 18 to 26 small, sharp teeth on
each side of their upper and lower jaws.

KkSince the Bottlenose dolphins are warm-blooded animals, they
have a thick layer fat called blubber. It helps to keep these
dolphins warm.

LlThese dolphins have their own language. They make
different kinds of noises or sounds to communicate
with other dolphins.

MmBottlenose dolphins can mimic other dolphins. If a dolphin is about
to jump then other one can copy and jump at the same time.

NnBottlenose dolphins sleep with one eye open and other eye
closed. They take short naps too.

OoDolphins do not chew their food, but swallow it whole. They
get the water they need from the animals they eat, rather
than drinking ocean water.

Pp
Dolphins use pectoral flippers to steer while they swim.
These dolphins swim very fast.

QqDolphins breathe by quickly inhaling and then relaxing their
muscular flaps to close the blowhole.

RrOnly half of the dolphin’s brain goes to sleep while the other
half remains awake so they can continue to breathe and
prevent from drowning.

SsBottlenose dolphins do not use their teeth to chew their
food. They eat fishes and sometimes squid.
