Billy loves basketball. He plays for a basketball
team called the Ballers. When the season
started, Billy didn’t really take practice
seriously. Billy would always show up to
practice late, never run hard, and barely shared
the ball. Billy was a very talented basketball
player. But the problem was that he knew he
was good. He always thought that nobody was
better than him. He thought that he was too
good for practice. Billy had the potential to be a
great player, but he lacked the discipline to
become one.

In the first game of the season, the Ballers
were going against the Stompers. The
Stompers won the championship last year. But
Billy went into the game with all the
confidence in the world. At the beginning of
the game, Billy was playing like his usual self.
Thinking he can take over the game by
himself, he didn’t pass the ball. The Stompers
caught on to this and started double teaming
him but he still didn’t pass the ball. The
Stompers got about 10 steals because of this.
When the coach took him out of the game, the
Ballers started coming back but it was too
late. The Ballers lost by seventeen points. Billy
was so mad, that he didn’t even shake the
other teams hand. He was so confused. He
couldn’t figure out why was he so good, yet
his team lost by so many points.

During practice the next day, Coach Parker
pulled Billy to the side to have a talk with him.
Coach Parker said, “What happened out there
yesterday? You didn’t run any of the plays you
were supposed to, you didn’t pass the ball, and
when the game ended, you didn’t shake the
other teams hand.”
Billy said, “ I don’t know. I thought I could do
it all by myself.”

“But it’s not a one man team. There are four
other people on the court and they are there for
a reason. Don’t get me wrong, I think you are
a tremendous basketball player, but you need
to work on sharing the ball. We could have
beaten those guys if you would have made a
couple of passes.”
This got Billy thinking. Did we really lose the
game because of me he thought to himself?
Maybe coach was right. Coach Parker forgave
Billy, not before making him run extra laps of
course.
