Heart disease describes a range of conditions that affect your heart. The term "heart disease" is often used interchangeably with the term "cardiovascular disease." Cardiovascular disease generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain or stroke.

- Genetic factors play a certain part in high blood pressure, heart disease, and other related conditions.
- The risk for heart disease can increase even more when heredity ( traits passed down from one generation to another through genes) combines with unhealthy lifestyle choices, such as smoking cigarettes and eating an unhealthy diet.
- It is also likely that people with a family history of heart disease share common environments and other potential factors that increase their risk.

Hypertension can also be caused by medical conditions, for example people with kidney disorders.
