One day my siblings and I sat together in my room laughing, talking, and playing games. This is what we did every night; me, Wind, my twelve year old brother, Drizzle, my nine year old sister, and Storm, my eight year old sister. Storm and Drizzle slept in the same room and Wind and I had our own rooms. We met every night in my room.
“Well if it isn’t the Weather Kids of annoyingness!” said my awful step-sister, Lily Anna. “Whistle, are you done my homework?”
“No,” I said, “For the last time I will never do your homework. I don’t think your Wicked Witch of the West Mother would be very happy to know that you asked me. I suggest you get out.” I whispered coldly.
She left the room angry and slammed her door.

The next morning I rode to school on my bike. It was the end of the final semester, the last week of the year and it was time to get our report cards. My teacher handed me my report card and I opened the envelope to find another report card with great grades.

Finally, it was the end of the day. I went home to grab my bags for Connecticut. My siblings were not very thrilled about my interview. To be honest I was pretty nervous myself; even if I do get in, what will happen to my siblings? I found Lily Anna in my room throwing the things from my luggage around the room. I screamed at her and repacked everything. Of course, even if my step-mother had noticed she wouldn’t have done anything. She didn't care about me or my siblings, just her own daughter. When my father died he left me a bracelet and it was the only tie I still had to him. He left it to me for my exceptional work in school despite him not being able to help me because of his work and sickness. The bracelet is engraved with “my precious first daughter.” I missed my father very much and wanted to make him proud. When I had the bracelet I felt like he was there to guide me.
After repacking, I proceeded to leave the house and went off to the airport.

I arrived at the airport and checked my bags for the flight to Connecticut. I wanted to get into a high ranked prep school that would be my best shot at getting into college. On the plane I sat between two kids. Their mother had seven kids on the plane and she was very grateful when I helped out. She told me that she had a large house right near Connecticut Prep. I was even offered a babysitting job if I got into the school.
After a few hours, the plane landed and I took a taxi to Connecticut Prep. On the way there, I listened to ‘Hamilton’ the musical. It helped me to have faith in myself and encouraged me to work hard. If Alexander Hamilton could come from a poor family who didn’t love him and rise up to be the Treasurer of the United States, then I could get away from my mean step family and do whatever I put my mind to.

When I got to Connecticut Prep I met up with Principal Powers.
“So why do you want to go to Connecticut Prep?” said Principal Powers.
“I want to be successful in life and go to college. Connecticut Prep is the best choice” I replied.
After talking with Mr. Powers for a while, he decided to call in two kids and told me that they would show me the school. I followed them outside the room and down the hall. “Hi Whistle, I’m Alex Schuyler, and this is Gabriella Dertzy!” the boy said. Gabriella smiled at me and shook my hand.
7
“I’m delighted to meet you! Where do you want to go first? The math room? The religion building? The science lab!? Ooh I know, the library!” she said.
“Woah, slow down Gabriella! She just got here. Let’s start the tour in the library and go from there, ok?” Alex said. He was the type of kid who waved his hands a lot when he talked.
“Ok, but then we should head to the photography room! I love it there! I bet you’ll love it too!”
When we arrived in the library I was full of excitement. It was huge and filled from top to bottom with books. It was amazing!
“What books do you like?” Alex asked.
“I like Shakespeare.” I said.

Alex took out his phone and tapped on an app called ‘Connecticut Prep: Student Needs.’ I watched, surprised as he pressed ‘School Library’ on the app. He typed in ‘Shakespeare’ and pressed enter. He then selected Romeo and Juliet which was my favorite. I heard a loud swish and the book was in an open shoot at the front of the library.
“This is my favorite play from Shakespeare.” Alex said.
“Me too.” I said bashfully. As he handed the book to me our hands touched and butterflies flew through my stomach. I realized that I may like him just a little but I pushed the thought deep down.

Gabriella burst through in excitement, clearly not realizing the moment she had interrupted. “Alright now onto the photography room! Who’s ready? I’m ready!”
I popped back into reality. “Right, the photography room. Let’s go,” I said awkwardly.
The whole way to the photography room Gabriella talked about how she and Alex had already visited the school earlier in the summer. They both were accepted a week later. We began to talk about our families and I told them about my siblings, Lily Anne, and my step-mother.
“My step-mother makes us clean up everything, we have a cook who only cooks. He doesn’t even clean up the dishes he makes!” I said.
10
I was laughing along with them as if it were all a joke. For once I felt confident in myself and that I was wanted by all the people around me. We continued to walk through the school, laughing, talking, and exploring.
“So, are you excited about coming to Connecticut Prep? I bet that getting away from your step-family must be so exciting!” said Alex.“Well, I don’t know if I will go here” I was all of a sudden sucked into my dark reality. I thought about Lily Anna delaying me from leaving by throwing my things everywhere. I knew that she wouldn’t make it easy for me to get anywhere in life, and what would happen to my siblings?
"What do you mean?" he said in confusion.
"I just don't know if I can leave my siblings with my step-mother and step-sister."
11
“Hey, you know that everything is going to work out and don’t worry because you will definitely get in. There is no doubt.”
“Thanks!” I said. Alex actually made me feel accepted, I liked that. The three of us continued to have a great time until there was no where else to visit in the school.
That night I flew back home and slept on the plane. When the plane landed I got a taxi home and arrived at home about 3am. I silently shut the door and turned around to see my step-mother angrily eyeing me. I knew that she hadn’t listened to me when I told her I was leaving, so naturally she was angry that I had not done the chores or kept my siblings quiet all day.
12
“Where were you?” She asked angrily.
“I was at Connecticut Prep.” I said.
“Connecticut Prep? Please! You will never get into that school. Despite your grades you are a nothing. You have no talents and you cannot even get a job as a janitor. Your cleaning skills are terrible! I expect you to have this house cleaned by the time I wake up tomorrow!”
As I walked up the stairs, I realized that my bracelet wasn’t on my hand! I looked all through my luggage but it wasn’t there. I finally stopped looking and went to sleep.
