1. George Washington 1789-1797He was the commander of the American
Army and a member of Virginia House of
Burgesses before he was president.
When he was elected as the first
president of the U.S, he passed the
Federal Judiciary Act to create a court
system. He put down the Whiskey
Rebellion, which showed the nation now
had an organized, dominating force. He
dealt with a predicament deciding if the
U.S should side with France or Britain,
but decided to stay neutral.


2. John Adams 1797-1801Before he was in office, John Adams
was the delegate of Massachusetts at
the Continental Congress and was also a
lawyer. When he was elected, the XYZ
affair took place. He passed the Alien
Sedition Acts to shut down the
immigrants and other opponents who
attacked him through speech,
newspapers and etc. Finally, the ended
up relocating the capital from
Philadelphia to Washington, D.C.


3. Thomas Jefferson 1801-1809Before he Thomas Jefferson was in
office, he wrote the Declaration of
Independence. He was the secretary
of States during Washington's
presidency. After he was elected as
president, he removed the tax on
whiskey. He also cut the army to keep
government revenues. Finally he
purchased the Louisiana territory from
France for $15 million which doubled
the size of the U.S.


4. James Madison 1809-1817Before he was in office, James Madison
wrote the Virginia resolution and served as
the Secretary of State. When he became
president, he declared war on Britain.
Indiana became a state in 1816. Trade with
both Britain and France was prohibited,
then in May, 1810, Congress authorized
trade with both if either would accept
America's view of neutral rights, to forbid
trade with the other nation.


5. James Monroe 1817-1825When James Monroe was not in
office, he was a member of
Continental Congress and a
minister to France. When he was
elected as president, the Missouri
Compromise of 1820 took place.
The First Seminole War took
place from 1817-1818. Finally, he
issued the Monroe Doctrine in
1823.


6. John Quincy Adams 1825-1829Before he was in office, John
Quincy Adams was appointed
Minister to Russia by President
Madison. He also negotiated the
Adams-Onis Treaty. When he was
elected, the Tariff of
Abominations was passed. The
construction of Cumberland Road
began. Finally, South Carolina
claimed the right to nullify the
federal laws for the first time.


7. Andrew Jackson 1829-1837Andrew Jackson was a lawyer and
a U.S senator before his
presidency. When he was elected,
he vetoed the charter of the
Second Bank of the United
States and had to deal with
inflation. The last major event
during his presidency was the
Indian Removal Act in 1830.


8. Martin Van Buren 1837-1841 
Martin Van Buren was a young lawyer
before his presidency and became
involved in New York Politics He also was
a New York state Senator. When he was
elected as president he dealt with the
panic of 1837 in which many banks and
businesses failed and the economy
crashed. He also faced the border
dispute with Maine and Canadian
territory but did not end it. Finally, the
Second Seminole War took place during
his presidency.

9. William Henry Harrison 1841During his presidency claimed to reestablish the Bank
of the United States and extend the capacity for
credit by issuing paper currency.
Harrison ignored his platform of overturning the spoils
system. Harrison and Clay a long dispute against each
other after many disagreements especially after
Harrison named Daniel Webster his Secretary of
State. Before Harrison was president, he studied
classics and history, but suddenly switched to a life of
military. He later became a governor of the Indian
Territory and had a task to obtain title to Indian lands
so settlers could move towards the wilderness.


10. John Tyler 1841-1845
Before John Tyler was president, he served
in the House of Representatives from 1816
to 1821. He also studied law at the College of
William and Mary. While John Tyler was
president, he signed the Webster-Ashburton
treaty in the border dispute between Maine
and Canada. Later on, he also signed the
Treaty of Whanghia, which made trade
between China and the U.S legal. Before he
left office, he signed the Joint Resolution,
which allowed the annexation of Texas.

11. James K. Polk 1845-1849
Before James K. Polk was president, he
graduated in 1818 from the University of North
Carolina. As a young lawyer he entered politics
and served in the Tennessee legislature. He
later then became president. During his
presidency, he signed the Oregon treaty with
Britain to settle the bored dispute between
Oregon and Vancouver. He was dealt with many
issues from the war with mexico and acquired
New Mexico and California. Finally, the last
major event that took place was the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848.
