Once there was a young pirate, named Carolyn Schaefer. She was known as a leader on the pirate ship.
Her expertise lies in being a pirate, and
speaking like a pirate. Arrgh!
One day she plans to break free of the
pirate life, and teach others
how to act and speak like a pirate.

She's been visiting Iowa State Island for 3 years now, and has learned a lot about it. She takes part in a lot of the activities on the boat, and especially enjoys showing the
new crew members what it is like being a pirate.
All of her crew mates are focused on finding the buried treasure, but only she knows
where it is because she has the map.

Ahoy mateys! This iswhere we sleep at night.

During an interview with the captain she learned a lot about what it takes to be a leader on the ship, and shared with him the things she does to be a leader.
"Leadership is not about controlling people," she said, "it's about caring for people
and being a useful resource."
"Aye!" he agreed.

She's always using her skills and being on the lookout.
Land, ho!6
Everyday she explores the island and searches for new things to find.

One day, she found a scroll that told her all about how to become a Servant Pirate Leader.
7
Being a Servant LeaderBe Authentic: By being who you are and not pretending to be something your not.Don't let others tell you who you are or worry about what they think of you
Stand out and Be Yourself
Be Vulnerable: By being honest with your feelings by understanding yourself.
Be able to admit that you made a mistake, build your courage.
Be Present: By being available for yourself and others when they need you.
Take a step back and breathe in order to really think about your actions.
Be Useful: Use your skills and talents to help others rather than sit back or go with flow.
Don't just let others do the job for you, but step in and help out.

The next day, she spent a lot of time thinking about how she fit into being a servant pirate leader.
9

Then an enemy boat appeared, and began firing canons! She called for the captain and the crew.
Captain!

"Don't just stand there!" she yelled, "Do something!"And she began loading the canons and fighting back, even though
it wasn't her job.
