Helpful Tips!
Hey adults! Look out for these helpful tips for YOU as you read through this book to help your child even more!
Our first tip: If you know about an IV placement ahead of time, try reading this book with your child the night beforehand so they know what to expect!
Hello, I'm Ivy the IV,
So you're the sick kid? I thought so.
I'll make you feel better, that's me!
Want my story? I'll take it slow.
Pick me ! Me ! I know just the trick!
Tiny pinch and then its starting!
I hear you’re extra weak and sick
Sneezing, barfing, freezing, farting,
What’s an IV? I’m glad you ask!
A small needle and plastic hose
Hook on your arm for a big task,
Attach a bag and there it goes!
Like a dried up old thirsty plant
Slumped and crispy instead of tall
I’ll make you strong when a pill can’t!
You need me so you can play ball!
Sometimes when you’re weak and sick
Or maybe not drinking enough
Old medicine won’t do the trick
My needle can power you up!
Helpful Tips!
Your child's nurse and doctor might be male or female. Don't let the pictures confuse you - they're all great!
Here’s your nurse, can you ask their name?
He (or she) is in charge of me!
They’ll be your helper in this game
Clean gloves and as nice as can be!
Helpful Tip!
Not everyone comes in with a Mom. Feel free to replace "Mommy" with "Daddy," "Grandpa," or any other adult that came with the patient today!
Example: "Maybe snuggle grandpa today! His lap looks like a comfy fit!"
Now you’re the boss! Time for your say!
You tell them where you want to sit.
Maybe snuggle mommy today
Her lap looks like a comfy fit!
Over your arm the nurse will scan
Looking for a bright and clear vein
Tiny tubes inside a human
That deliver stuff like a train.
Helpful Tips!
If your child asks if the needle will hurt- be truthful. You may say “It may hurt for a second but it will be over very quickly.” By staying truthful the child has realistic expectations of what is coming and you maintain their trust.
