We dedicate this work to our partners in the project“The Rivers Tell”, included in the Erasmus + Program.

It's an international river that is born in Spain and it flows near Lisbon, the capital of our country.
Our Tagus River

Our home city, Santarém is located in a upland.

Near Santarém, close to the river bank there are two locations: Ribeira de Santarém ...

... and Caneiras.


Near the river we can see many flora and fauna species.To know and protect the natural heritage and biodiversity of these sites, the 1st BIOSPOT was created in the municipality of Santarém.

There is a lot of diversity in what concerns flora and fauna in Tagus River.

Great-white-egret (scientific name: Egretta Alba): Very scarce birds, which appear in wetlands

Heron (scientific name: Ardea cinerea) is a large water bird. Here it is eating an eel.



Osprey (Scientific name: Pandion haliaetus): It is a large bird of prey that can be seen mostly from September to April.

Kingfisher (Scientific name: Alcedo Atthis): is a very colorful bird.

Wild Nightingale (Scientific name: Cettia Cetti) is an insectivorous bird that is difficult to observe but identifiable by its characteristic song.
Greenfinch (Scientific name: Carduelis chloris) has a showy coloration, but it is its corner that gets the most attention.

Mullet (Scientific name: Mullet): Long-bodied, broad-headed fish with small mouth, used in local cuisine.

Recently Identified: Arched-mouth-Boga (Scientific name: Rutilus lemmingii):Native species from Portugal, aren't usually seen and, as a curiousity,they can reach up to 12 cm.


Pardelha (Scientific name:Anaecypris Hispanic) average 6 cm in length with black spots on the flanks and silver highlights. Critically Threatened.
Eel (Scientific name: Anguilla anguilla): It is a fish of elongated and cylindrical body, that is compressed in the caudal region. Used in local culinary

Dragonflies (Scientific name:Sympetrum sp) lay their eggs in water, where they spend most of their lives. They have an unmatched beauty and in the adult state they are terrible predators.


Common green frog (Scientific name:Rana perezi) is the most abundant amphibian and easy to observe .
