UNIT 1: UNDERSTANDING MATTER-PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES
objective: identify properties of matter and describe physical and chemical changes in order to describe the characteristics of matter. WHAT IS MATTER??
real world application: the three phases of matter make everything up in this world. it is in the cars we drive, liquids we drink and the air we breathe.
Through this unit i learned about the three phases (liquid, solid and gas). All of these phases of matter are made up of small molecules. and what defines the type of matter is the shape of the molecules, the distance between each molecule and their kinetic energy. When you manipulate these objects you can do it in two ways. by changing their physical property (melt, boil, etc) or chemically (burn, decompose, etc)
INTERESTING FACT:If you look at matter at a molecular level, the three phases are all made of molecules. The only difference is their kinetic energy, shape and how compact the molecules are together. this was interesting because it is simple difference.
INSTRUCTION EFFECTIVE?: this unit while we were not able to attend school and do real labs was very effective. As a student i was able to keep up with this unit and learn and understand the content super quickly. Videos that were assigned showed labs that allowed me to add real connection to the content.
CLASSROOM OBJECTIVE: as a class i confidently believe we met the objective of understanding physical and chemicals properties. And as an individual i can say the same for myself
IMPROVEMENT: i think as a teacher many students to better when they have hands on activities. so if we had been given online games or labs too mimick the videos we watched it would've help with retention and comprehension of the content.
UNIT 2: ENERGY
OBJECTIVE: explain how heat and energy are related. classify processes as either endothermic or exothermic.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION: energy is used everyday, and every second. Heat is transferred always from hot too cold. and item can gain heat or lose heat, example someone hand touching a table, or an ice cube melting vs lighting a candle or boiling water
through this unit i learned about heat and energy transfer and the endothermic and exothermic process. Heat and energy is transferred through either two of these processes. The subject is the item you focus on, and its surroundings are the items in which your subject is interaction with. If the subject is giving/losing heat and transferring it to the surroundings this is called exothermic process. If the subject is absorbing heat from the surroundings this is called the endothermic process. to find the specific heat capacity of an object you do Q=mcAT. Q=heat energy, m=mass, c=specific heat capacity, AT= change in temperature
INSTRUCTION EFFECTIVE?: luckily for this unit while chemistry is a lot about experimenting and labs i think this unit was very effective without it. The videos we watched were high tech and honestly were more effective then the labs students would've conducted.
CLASS OBJECTIVE: I think overall as a class we understand energy and heat transfer. However this was one of the hardest units, and as an individual this was a unit that even when i completely understand the content, i would make simple mistakes, or get confused quickly.
IMPROVEMENT: i think with this unit it is more about repetition and practice. the longer you focus and practice this content the more you understand it. Thus i believe it would be very hard to improve the quality of the teaching in this unit.
UNIT 3: PHASES OF MATTER
OBJECTIVE: DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN SOLIDS, LIQUIDS AND GASES BY DEFINING THEM IN TERMS OF THEIR ATOMIC STRUCTURE, PARTICLE MOTION AND PARTICLE PACKAGING.
REAL WORLD APPLICATION: these phase changes happen everyday. condensation, melting, evaporation, etc. You can see these changes in ice to water. or water to steam, etc.
