The Bottled Fish
By Beatriz Goncalves Marinheiro, Year 6
Although it seems false this is what happens to some fish… Save the ocean, say no to plastic!

Do not trash our beaches !!
By Elisa Caruana, Year 6
All these things are supposed to be in the trash bin. Then why do you throw them around on the sand where other sea creatures live? I feel like this represents the sea and its sad face because of pollution and the trash that we’re throwing away and which then ends up in the ocean.

Environmental Problems Around Us
By Nayessa Gauci, Year 6
Many people enjoy spending their free time in the various large green areas we have in Malta. These places are very popular with tourists and with Maltese families for picnics and hikes. Unfortunately, along the pathways of the these places, one may see a lot of plastic bags, orange peels, paper, packets of wet wipes, plastic bottles, packets of sweets, cigarette butts and tissues. This happens although there are several rubbish bins placed in the areas. One may also see pieces of broken glass which are dangerous for others, especially for young children.

All this makes me feel sad, angry and ashamed as this shows how careless certain people are. Littering can lead to soil, water and air pollution. It also leaves a bad impact on the environment because hazardous chemicals can leach out of the litter and pollute the soil and water nearby. Litter may be a threat to certain species, such as reptiles, and other small animals as they may become trapped in plastic bags and suffocate. We should be aware that there is life on land and that we need to keep these places clean and beautiful as we are ruining nature and the environment around us. It is a shame that we litter the environment that we need to live in.

I suggest that when people go for a picnic, they should always take an empty plastic bag so they will put their litter in it and dispose of it properly later.
More TV programmes, articles on local newspapers and posters in public places need to be done to show people the effects of littering and how to reduce it.
Everyday we can all do something to prevent litter and make our community safer and cleaner.

The aftermath of camping, at the cost of the environment
By Jean Pulis, Year 6
The rubbish skip is overflowing with trash. The waste is not separated and both the grey and the black garbage bags are thrown in the rubbish skip mixed together. This shows that waste is not discarded responsibly. Waste can be carried by wind or by animals, littering other spaces, leaving adverse impacts on the ecosystem and natural habitat of animals living in the surroundings. It is also a nuisance to the public eye.

Reduce Single-Use Plastics in Food Packaging
By Ben Bonello, Year 6
Do we really need so much additional and unnecessary packaging, which serves no purpose? It is not there for protection or to extend the life of the item. Packaging of sweets can often be excessive, especially during Christmas.

More than any other time of the year, Christmas is when excess packaging gets noticed – and the problem seems to be getting worse. Food packaging is getting out of control. Waste in the name of the consumer. Most plastic products become waste in the same year in which they were produced.
The Consumer Wants it So !!
They come in Nature's Perfect Packaging
By Luca Azzopardi Bellizzi, Year 6
Many grocery stores pre-package their fruit and vegetables in plastic, and offer plastic bags for loose items. There are simple alternatives to help reduce your impact on the environment. Take action on excess packaging and stop single-use plastic problems.

Paper, Plastic or Re-Usable?
By Luca Gauci, Year 6
No amount of money, oil or gold is worth more than the bees, trees and clean water. Switch to the reusable fabric bag as a sustainable plastic bag option.

Triple-washed, plastic-wrapped baby greens may seem convenient, but that is just another piece of plastic that may end up in the ocean, and we do not need anymore! By 2050, experts believe there will be more plastic in the ocean by weight than fish. SCARY!

It is not just bags at the checkout, what about the plastic clogging supermarket aisles? Sadly, an increasing number of people are using plastic packaging for the sake of convenience. It may sound obvious, but the excessive use of disposable plastic bags has become a real threat to the environment.
