The story is about the village of Humulesti and its inhabitants. It focuses on the establishment of a school and the experiences of the students. The second part tells the story of Nica's cherry-stealing adventure. The third part provides descriptions of the surrounding villages and historical places. The fourth part describes Nica's reluctance to leave Humulesti and his journey to Socola.
