Despite receiving a chilling, anonymous phone threat, the sisters successfully crack the final combination and hand the evidence over to federal authorities. The story ends with the Vance family facing nationwide exposure and arrest, finally bringing justice to the town, relief to the long-suffering school janitor Arthur, and peace to the memory of the diary's original owner, Layla.
