Kukan thought that the year had gone by as slow as a Rocket. As he filled the pots with water, he had just remembered that he had to be at his big brother, Tutankhamen’s Pharaoh ceremony in about ten minutes. He couldn’t be late, otherwise his brother would kill him! Kukan quickly scooped up some more water from the water hole and hurried back to his families hut. But suddenly he tripped on a rock, let go of his pot and it smashed. “I guess the water will have to wait.” said Kukan drowsily.

When Kukan got back to his family’s hut, everyone was preparing for the ceremony. “Kukan, where have you been? We’ve been searching everywhere!” scolded his mum. “I’ve been getting water!” answered Kukan. “But…I lost it…” “Well then get ready!” Kukan went to his room and changed into his royal suit. He scowled. Sometimes he hated being a part of the royal family. Since he was the youngest in the family, the other members always made him fetch water and do all the chores around the hut.
After Kukan got dressed, he went out to the front of his house, then got in the family carriage and they headed off towards the ceremonial area. When the carriage got closer to their destination, he could see tiny dots in the distance moving about and cheering. Kukan suspected they were fans of Tutankhamen's, and he was right, they were. When Kukan and his family got out of the carriage, all of Tuts followers bowed down to him. A few intensely painful hours later Kukan was sitting in a boiling room, just waiting for everything to be over. ‘The things you have to do for your brother.’ Kukan thought. “I’m just going to close my eyes for a mini-snore…”
Suddenly a cheer erupted from the room and Kukan jumped up. “Huh?” Kukan was quickly pushed and shoved out of the way as hundreds of people tried to get a look at the new Pharaoh, Tutankhamen in his crown. “Hey, he’s my brother, stop pushing me! Ahh! Stop it!” A few seconds later he was all the way at the back of the building. “Its no use going back in there.” murmured Kukan sadly. So he walked back towards home. “Right now my family is probably having a fancy dinner at the temple, not even thinking about where I am.” ‘My family probably wouldn’t even notice if I left them…’ thought Kukan.
Then a lightbulb went over his head. What if he ran away from home for a few days? It couldn’t hurt right? He knew the neighbourhood pretty well, so he decided he would leave the next morning.
When Kukan woke up the next morning, all of his family were back from the temple and asleep in bed. He was excited because it was time for him to leave the house. In his ruck sack, he had packed some papyrus scrolls, fruit, a tub of water and a few pages of tips on what food in the wild you can and cannot eat. So Kukan slowly crept out the front door and closed the door behind him. Kukan wondered if his friend, Chargel wanted to go with him. Kukan went over to his house across the street, and knocked on the side of his house where Chargel slept.
Finally they found a cave to sit and eat in. They both chugged down water, and ate some rye. Then Chargal noticed something, there were dozens of eyes staring out at them from in the dark. “Hyenas!” said Chargal Quietly. Kukan turned around slowly and screamed “Ahhhh!" "Shh! Stop screaming! said Chargel through gritted teeth. "Let’s get out of here!” They practically trampled over each other to get out of the cave. Not far behind them, the hyenas were snapping at their heels. “We need to think of something, fast!” breathed Kukan. “I got it!” Chargel stopped and rummaged through his bag with just enough time to grab a uncooked huge piece of steak and chucked it to the upcoming hyenas. Then he sped up to Kukan. One they were both a safe distance away from the hyenas, they both stopped and caught their breath. They saw the hyenas devouring the piece of meat in the distance. “Surely our families have sent out a search party by now!” panted Kukan.
Back at Kukan's house… 12.30pm everyone is going about their daily business…
"Kukan’s been gone for days now.” worried Kukan’s Mum. “Don’t worry darling, it could have been worse. What if we lost Tutankhamen! Are you sure this search party is necessary?” doubted his dad. “I’m sure I’m sure! If we don’t go soon, he could be long gone!” “Yes, but while we’re gone, things in the town could get out of hand.” kukan's father noted. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it all sorted out with the guard and Tutankhamen.” confirmed Kukan's Mum. “ Oh… Okay. Let's go.”
“How much longer do we have to do this for again?” grunted Chargel. “Just a little longer Chargel. We’re getting close.” guessed Kukan. For the past four days, both of the boys had been trying to find a civilisation to have some decent food. Since Rome was nearby they decided they would go there. Luckily some nice people that lived near the beach lended them a boat to use. It was a risky move going to Rome, because in the past Romans and Egyptians hadn’t been all that friendly to one another. But, it was that, or starve to death.
When the boys arrived in the boat harbour, the city was bustling with people. They walked around for a bit but then Kukan saw a horrible sight! There were Egyptians being hanged on every street corner. The coloured drained from Kukan’s face. They needed to get out of here. Now. Kukan looked at his friend and tried to get him to move but he was glued to the ground. Any second now somebody would notice them. “Come on chargel!” But he wouldn’t budge.
Suddenly, guards were running at him from all directions. That seemed to get him to snap out of it. Kukan saw a gap between two of the guards, then they ran through. They both ran down an alleyway and tried to lose them by doing a few turns down different streets. Kukan saw a man emptying out his rubbish down the street and ran up to him. “We need somewhere to hide. Please help us!" pleaded Kukan. “Well, okay .” said the man. He let them into his house and he told them to hide in the bedroom. Once they were in there, they could hear guards yelling outside of the house, still searching for them. “I never should have run away.”said Kukan. “Don’t worry, we'll get out of here”assured Chargel. “Okay.” murmured Kukan.
